The Economist’s award-winning Video department produces factual content that reflects the newspaper’s global outlook. Our short, focused videos deliver clear, incisive analysis in a compelling, accessible format. They attract millions of views each month and are published on our website and app, and across platforms including Instagram, YouTube, X, Facebook and TikTok.

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic graduate or graphic designer to join our video team as a Junior Motion-Graphics Designer. In this role we will train you in motion design so you can help to create editorial and data-driven videos and visual assets for use across our digital platforms.

You should have a strong willingness to learn and effective communication and solid illustration skills, along with a keen interest in video, global politics, current affairs and factual storytelling. An interest in data visualisation and map creation would be a plus.

  • Demonstrable proficiency in Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Creative thinking in order to conceive, generate and implement ideas
  • The ability to take an analytical approach to design, initiative and decision-making
  • Planning and organising with meticulous attention to detail in design, planning and execution
  • Proactivity and the ability to make quick, well-judged and informed decisions, as well as innovative ideas and techniques
  • Works well under pressure, to tight deadlines and in a variety of situations, with different individuals or groups
  • A basic understanding of After Effects, Premiere Pro, 3D Pipeline and Cinema 4D would be useful

About the role:

As a Junior Motion-Graphics Designer your main responsibility will be to support the development and creation of motion graphics for our short-form vertical videos. You will gain hands-on experience across all stages of video production and the wider editorial process. From storyboarding to delivering final assets, you will develop skills in typography, data visualisation, map design and motion graphics for editorial storytelling. If you are curious, eager to develop and excited to help shape The Economist’s video output, we would love to hear from you.
