Job summary

The National Audit Office (NAO) in London or Newcastle is seeking a Junior Developer to join the AI, Data and Analytics Team (AIDA). You will help design, build, test and maintain digital tools that support financial audit work across the Financial Audit service line.

This role suits someone with 1–3 years of coding experience who can work independently on defined tasks while collaborating with developers, analysts, testers and audit specialists to deliver reliable, well-documented solutions.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Python and ability to solve practical development or data problems.
• Understanding of programming fundamentals: functions, variables, data structures, control flow, unit testing, integration testing and debugging.
• Ability to work with data and apply basic quality checks, validation and transformation.
• Ability to produce clear, structured written documentation for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Attention to detail and commitment to reliable, secure and maintainable solutions.
• Ability to work collaboratively and contribute in a multidisciplinary team.
• Interest in NAO’s work and using technology to improve public services.

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and improve applications, scripts and tools that support financial audit delivery.
• Write clear, reliable, maintainable code following team standards.
• Support frontend and backend components, including interfaces, APIs and data processing logic.
• Work with structured and semi-structured data for data preparation and analysis.
• Assist with testing, QA and defect resolution, documenting results and maintaining an audit trail.
• Collaborate to translate user requirements into development tasks and deliver on timescales.
• Contribute to documentation, user guidance and handover materials.
• Learn new tools and frameworks as the AIDA stack evolves.
