Job description
SEN & SEMH Teachers – January Start – Basingstoke, Hampshire

Primary and secondary SEN and SEMH (Special Educational Needs and Social, Emotional and Mental Health) schools in Basingstoke and the surrounding areas are seeking fully qualified teachers for January start dates. These settings support pupils with autism, learning difficulties, communication needs, sensory processing differences, and in some schools, pupils with SEMH needs who may present with challenging behaviour. Schools are looking for adaptable, resilient, and compassionate teachers who can deliver high-quality, individualised education across a range of specialist environments.

Teachers with varied subject specialisms are encouraged to apply – Maths and PE teachers are particularly in demand, though all specialist areas are welcomed.

You may be working in SEN or SEMH settings with pupils who have:
  • Autism spectrum conditions and a need for routine, predictability, and visual supports
  • Moderate to severe learning difficulties (MLD/SLD)
  • Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)
  • Sensory processing differences resulting in overload, shutdowns, or avoidance
  • Cognitive delays affecting memory, processing, and problem-solving
  • Social communication challenges
  • SEMH needs including anxiety, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, or trauma‑related behaviours
  • Challenging behaviour requiring calm, consistent, and restorative approaches

These pupils thrive with patient, structured teaching and a relational approach that supports communication, positive behaviour, and engagement.

As a Teacher in an SEN or SEMH school, you will:
  • Plan and deliver highly differentiated lessons suited to a range of abilities and needs
  • Work alongside TAs, SENCOs, therapists, and multi‑agency staff
  • Use structured teaching approaches (e.g., TEACCH) and communication systems (e.g., PECS, Makaton)
  • In SEMH settings, support pupils through challenging behaviour using consistent, trauma‑informed approaches
  • Create inclusive learning environments that are low‑arousal, predictable, and supportive
  • Contribute to EHCP targets, reviews, behaviour plans, and progress assessments
  • Foster positive relationships that encourage communication, resilience, and independence
  • Engage with parents, carers, and external professionals
Job Details:
  • January start dates available across multiple schools
  • Full‑time roles available; part‑time considered in some settings

  • Long‑term and permanent roles paid to Teacher Pay Scale (MPS/UPS), dependent on experience
  • CPD opportunities provided (autism training, communication approaches, behaviour training, etc.)
