Job description

We are looking for a highly organised and detail-oriented IT Technical Manager to support the Head of IT & Digital Systems in delivering digital projects and managing day-to-day IT operations across Badger Group. This senior operational role bridges technical expertise and project coordination, ensuring smooth running of IT systems and infrastructure while contributing to strategic initiatives aligned with the NHS 10-year digitalisation plan.

The IT Technical Manager will take ownership of core IT operations, including system maintenance, incident resolution, documentation, and dashboard reporting. You will provide technical guidance to the Helpdesk team, oversee small projects, and ensure compliance, data integrity, and business continuity. This position is ideal for someone with a strong technical background who enjoys combining hands‑on problem-solving with operational management responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

Lead, mentor, and support the development of the IT Helpdesk and technical support team and manage team workloads to ensure SLAs, KPIs, and project deadlines are consistently achieved.

Operational IT Management

Oversee the daily operation of IT systems, infrastructure, and applications to ensure stability, security, and performance.

Manage and maintain effective relationships with external IT suppliers, vendors, and service providers.

Coordinate procurement, asset management, user access provisioning, and vendor activities to support operational needs.

Improve operational efficiency through process improvements, automation, standardisation, and proactive system maintenance.

Monitor supplier and contract performance to ensure SLA compliance and service quality.

Review performance data, elevate service concerns, and coordinate resolution actions.

Support the Head of IT and Digital Systems with contract renewals, cost reviews, procurement decisions, and vendor evaluation processes.

Project & Technical Delivery

Coordinate day-to-day project activities including scheduling, tracking progress, updating plans, and managing dependencies.

Gather and validate requirements from technical teams and end users to ensure deliverables are achievable and aligned to business needs.

Support or oversee technical implementation tasks, testing, change control, deployments, and system rollouts.

Identify and manage risks (technical, operational, or supplier‑related) and coordinate mitigation strategies.

Contribute to the technical delivery of strategic and digital transformation projects.

Documentation & Governance

Create, maintain, and update documentation for systems, networks, installations, procedures, standards, and troubleshooting guides.

Maintain accurate and version‑controlled project documentation including requirements, designs, risk logs, test results, and reports.

Ensure all documentation is accessible, up to date, and supports effective operational and project activity.

Support the adoption of Agile, Scrum, and Waterfall methodologies where applicable.

Strategic Support & Reporting

Translate high‑level strategic goals set by the Head of IT and Digital Systems into clear operational tasks and workstreams.

Support departmental planning, performance reporting, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Lead operational workstreams or project areas when required.

Prepare and present reports, dashboards, operational updates, and summaries for senior leadership and board‑level reviews.

Today Badger has opted‑in GP members in 60+ practices and provides 24/7 message handling, urgent primary care and GP out‑of‑hours service to a patient base of 1.3 million. We run the Urgent Treatment Services at Solihull and Erdington Stockland Green, with face‑to‑face and 24/7 remote clinical assessment services operating from Bourne Road in Aston. Our head offices are at Glover Street, near the city centre. Badger was recognised with an Outstanding rating following our Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in March 2024.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Act as the senior escalation point for complex or high‑impact technical issues.

Resolve operational conflicts, promote best‑practice working methods, and drive a positive service culture.

Build strong working relationships with internal clients and represent the IT function in relevant meetings.

Work hands‑on with technical staff to resolve escalations, undertake problem investigations, and support system recovery.

Relationship to Other Roles

The role will report to the Head of IT and Digital Systems.

Person Specification
Experience
  • Proven experience in a Technical Manager, IT Manager, or similar leadership role.
  • Strong technical knowledge across Microsoft 365, Azure, networking, virtualisation, and RMM/PSA tools.
  • Demonstrable experience improving operational processes and service efficiency.
  • Good understanding of IT infrastructure, software development, and technical.
  • Typically, 2–5 years of experience in IT roles.
  • Experience managing or overseeing an IT support desk.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Leadership, stakeholder management, business administration.
  • MCSA, MCITP.
  • ITIL, PRINCE2, or other management/technical certifications.
  • CompTIA (Network+ A+ or Security+).
  • Awareness of cybersecurity best practices within managed service environments.
