Job description

Dig into the detail. Shape smarter services. Help us build a better borough.

Behind every great Council is a team that makes sure things are working as they should – fair, effective and accountable. That’s where you come in.

As an Internal Auditor, you’ll dive deep into how we operate, helping teams across the Council work smarter and deliver better outcomes for the people we serve. It’s a role that blends analysis and curiosity, with plenty of scope to grow and make your mark.

Working Style:

You’ll be based in the Borough for 3 days a week, playing a key role in serving the local community. Whether you’re working on the frontline or behind the scenes, you’ll be part of a dedicated team making a real difference to residents’ lives.

What you’ll be doing:

You’ll be hands‑on from day one – planning, leading and delivering audits across three Councils: Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, and Hammersmith & Fulham. You’ll get a rare behind‑the‑scenes look at how local government really works – from frontline services to back‑office systems – and help identify what’s working well and where we can do better.

You’ll scope audits, research background info, meet with staff at all levels, and test controls in place. You’ll be the one connecting the dots – analysing findings, highlighting risks, and recommending practical improvements that really stick.

Once your fieldwork is complete, you’ll write up clear, focused reports that help leaders make informed decisions. You’ll need to juggle multiple projects, manage your time well, and keep everyone in the loop as you go. Whether it’s a school audit or a cross‑Council review, your work will shine a light on performance and drive real change.

What you’ll bring

You’ve got recent experience in internal audit and you’re ready to hit the ground running. You might be coming through an apprenticeship, IAPrac, or have hands‑on experience from a similar role – either way, you know what a good audit looks like and how to carry one through from start to finish.

You’re curious by nature and confident working independently, but also know when to ask the right questions and bring others in. You can build rapport with people at all levels – from junior officers to directors – and adapt your communication style to suit.

Strong writing skills are essential, along with good project management and timekeeping. You’ll be comfortable using Microsoft Office, and you’ll thrive in a fast‑paced environment where learning never stops. Bonus points if you know the public sector – or are keen to learn more about its unique challenges and opportunities.

Why join us

At RBKC, we’re all in – investing in our people, our communities and our future.

You’ll be part of a growing, ambitious audit team with experienced colleagues ready to support and develop you. Whether you’re studying for a qualification or stepping into new challenges, we’ll back your professional growth every step of the way.

We celebrate learning, share successes, and encourage collaboration – because we know good audits come from good people working together. This is a role where you’ll see the difference you make, have your voice heard, and build a career with purpose.
