Job title: Ancillary Lifting Apprentice

Location: Barrow-in-Furness (Cumbria)

Salary: Starting from £14,527 - £23,493 per annum dependent on age with annual progression through the scheme duration

What you'll be doing:
  • Carrying out pre-use checks on all lifting equipment and accessories, ensuring that they are serviceable and appropriate for lifting and moving tasks
  • Ensuring that bulky lifting equipment is collected from stores and is available at the lifting location, which can be several scaffold levels and requested many times per shift
  • Safely using all lifting equipment and accessories in accordance with the manufacturer's guidance and the lift plan in place
  • Establishing weights and characteristics of the load to be moved properly, using mathematical techniques and formula to calculate slinging methods, angles and weight/centre of gravity of load
  • Operating portable lifting equipment and cranes
  • Moving loads ranging in weight of a few kilograms to large submarine sections weighing hundreds of tonnes

The Manufacturing Team:

Manufacturing is the largest function in submarines at Barrow in Furness with a growing population of approximately 5000 people. It encompasses a variety of Sub‑Disciplines including Operations, Production Planning and Controls, Test and Commissioning, Manufacturing Engineering and Site and Facilities; with a unified commitment to build and support the submarine programme throughout its entire life cycle from cut steel through to sea trials. Every Employee within Manufacturing has a touch point to the submarine itself allowing them to see their valuable contribution to the defence of the nation through the importance of each task they complete.

The Submarines Team:

Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.

The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state‑of‑the‑art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.

Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.
