Job description

Our Public Sector client is looking for an Interim CCAB Qualified Financial Accountant for a period of 3-6 months whilst they go through the process of recruiting to the role on a substantive basis.

The Financial Accountant is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial records and reporting within the organisation. This role supports the preparation of statutory accounts, management reporting, tax and VAT filings, and audit coordination, contributing to sound financial management and informed decision‑making.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting:

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are recorded accurately and timely.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate discrepancies.
  • Support consolidation of group financial results.

Management Accounting:

  • Assist in preparing management reports, budgets, forecasts, and variance analysis.
  • Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business performance and strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor expenditure and support cost control initiatives.

Compliance and Controls:

  • Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and tax/VAT requirements.
  • Prepare and file VAT, corporation tax, and other relevant returns.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls and accounting processes.
  • Liaise with external auditors and coordinate audit requirements.

Other Duties:

  • Support system improvements and automation initiatives within finance.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with other departments to ensure financial alignment.
  • Ad hoc analysis and project work as required by the Financial Controller or senior Management.

Public Sector experience is desirable but not essential so this role could be a great ‘foot in the door’ for those wishing to pursue a career in the public sector.
