Job summary

A water services provider in the UK is seeking a Maintenance and Calibration Instrument Technician. You will be responsible for the maintenance, calibration, and certification of instrumentation assets. The ideal candidate will possess a recognized Electrical Apprenticeship and have experience in fault-finding instrumentation. Overview

Maintenance and Calibration Instrument Technician – 2 vacancies available.

Salary & Benefits (5b): £32,088 – £40,110 depending on experience + company van + 25 days holiday + 1 wellbeing day + bank holidays.

Locations: North East / South Yorkshire (York, Malton, Hull, Scarborough, Thirsk, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster). Regular, regional travel.

Work type: Permanent, 37 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

We provide essential water and wastewater services to the Yorkshire region, ensuring clean, safe drinking water and efficient wastewater removal. We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan for Yorkshire’s water needs 24/7, 365 days a year.

With new environmental legislation and increasing customer expectations, our Maintenance and Calibration Technicians play a key role in meeting regulatory and customer standards.

Purpose of the role

Complete repairs, maintenance, calibration and certification of Yorkshire Water’s instrumentation assets in water and wastewater treatment and pumping installations, supporting Planned & Reactive maintenance. Drive improved asset reliability through effective decision‑making.

Key Accountabilities
  • Drive excellent Health and Safety behaviours in relation to policy and standards.
  • Identify improvements in Health and Safety and process across any areas with impact on your role and others.
  • Comply with Management of Change processes and use Yorkshire Water maintenance task lists, Safe Working Procedures and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Maintain your own PPE, vehicle and tools; report defects and ensure equipment is tested and inspected in advance of expiry dates.
  • Work as part of a team to deliver excellent performance, managing your workload in line with business requirements and the Working Time Directive, often in remote locations.
  • Maintain, fault‑find and repair all Yorkshire Water instrumentation equipment within your area of responsibility, meeting KPI and quality management procedures.
  • Understand how your actions affect the company’s water quality obligations.
  • Assist in the development and training of apprentices and less experienced craft and technicians.
  • Develop professionally to achieve ‘competent’ level 5 technician status, supported by training and a progression plan.
Where you fit in
  • Safe isolation to current IET regulations.
  • Maintenance of instrumentation (pressure, level, temperature, analytical instrumentation & flow monitoring systems).
  • IT literate (e.g. MS Office).
  • Ability to produce maintenance reports.
Skills & Qualifications – Essential
  • Recognised Electrical Apprenticeship or equivalent in Instrumentation / Electrical / Electronic Engineering, or Professional Engineering Technician registration.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces (training can be provided).
  • Experience fault‑finding and installation of pressure/level/flow/temperature instrumentation.
  • Industrial asset maintenance environment experience.
  • Strong team‑building and communication skills.
  • Experience supporting and embedding change, influencing culture and behaviours.
  • Capability to work independently or within a team.
  • Track record of delivering against challenging business targets.
  • Full clean UK driving licence.
Desirable skills & qualifications
  • IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations, City and Guilds 2382.
  • CompEx 1 – 4.
  • Experience maintaining, calibrating and certifying analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience maintaining, calibrating and certifying flow monitoring equipment.
  • Fault finding on 4 to 20 mA loops.
  • Working within ATEX standards.
  • Experience calibrating ultrasonic level, pressure and other water‑industry instruments.
Eligibility & checks

Successful candidates will undergo pre‑employment checks, including a Basic Disclosure Check and potentially a Counter‑Terrorist or Security Check clearance, depending on the role.
