Job summary

Healthcare Improvement Scotland is recruiting an Inspector to join the Regulation team, primarily within the IR(ME)R remit. This Band 7, permanent role is full-time (36 hours per week) with hybrid working in Edinburgh/Glasgow.

You will undertake IR(ME)R inspections across Scotland, review notifications, report findings to leads and colleagues, and help develop inspection guidance. Some travel with overnight stays is required.

Qualifications

Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS) Regulates Medical Exposure To Ionising Radiation In Scotland On Behalf Of Scottish Ministers. We Inspect Services To Ensure That They Comply With The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. Services Include

• NHS hospitals
• private hospitals and clinics
• dentists, and
• any other area involving patient medical exposure of ionising radiation.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland supports NHS Scotland and independent healthcare providers to improve and deliver the highest standard of health care to the people of Scotland. The Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017, IR(ME)R team is located within the Regulation team, which is part of the Quality Assurance and Regulation Directorate. The regulation team contributes to the regulation of independent healthcare and medical exposure to radiation, to improve the care provided across Scotland.

There is an opportunity for an inspector to join the regulation team, primarily within the IR(ME)R team, but all inspectors can be asked to work across different inspection activities within the Directorate.

As an experienced healthcare professional or inspector, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team which makes care better through inspection, with a focus on improved outcomes for people experiencing care, their carers and families. You will also be expected to participate in other Quality Assurance Directorate activities as required.

Responsibilities

To this end there is an opportunity for an inspector to be deployed to the Regulation team on a full-time basis. The key responsibilities for this role include:

• Undertake IR(ME)R inspections throughout Scotland, to services delivering or administering ionising radiation to patients undergoing medical and non-medical exposures.
• Manage a case load of notifications and conduct investigations of exposures much greater than intended. Reviewing and commenting on the steps in place to prevent significant accidental or unintended exposure to ionizing radiation.
• Report on the findings from inspections and notifications
• Feedback findings to a wide variety of staff groups, such as IR(ME)R leads, Consultants, Service managers and medical physics experts
• Support the development of inspection guidance and protocols
• Travel throughout Scotland will be required with overnight stays.

You may also be asked to support the regulation of Independent Healthcare Services

Support will be provided to develop the skills and knowledge, within a skills framework.

Knowledge and experience of working with diagnostic equipment that utilises ionising radiation in clinical settings would be advantageous but not essential. For example, plain film x-ray, CT, fluoroscopy services and interventional services.

Educated to degree level, with experience of inspections or working with ionising radiation, you will be able to demonstrate clearly how your knowledge, skills and experience are particularly suited to the programme of work.
