About the job

The UK Sovereign Operations team in Google Public Sector delivers, operates, and secures private cloud services.

As an Infrastructure Operations Engineer, you will be part of a team of engineers that deploys and operates our private cloud services for critical customers in the UK. Working with a wide range of technologies, you will be deploying new infrastructure as our deployments scale, rolling out new features and updates, troubleshooting problems, and managing incidents. In line with Google’s standard engineering practices, you will automate common tasks, manage incidents and conduct blameless retrospectives to avoid the same problems happening again. You will work with local support staff to help them with challenging problems and you will reach back into Google’s product teams for help where you need it.

In this role, you will troubleshoot technical problems and if necessary you will update our playbooks, not just to help our UK team but to help similar teams around the world. You will help drive the success of Google Cloud by understanding and advocating customers issues. This will include a need to sometimes work non-standard work hours and participate in an on-call rotation.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field such as Computer Networking, Information Security, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of experience in security engineering, DevSecOps, or in platform engineering roles.
  • Experience with deployment and orchestration technologies (such as Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos, OpenStack, Puppet, Chef, Salt, Ansible, Jenkins).
  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration, or networking and debugging/troubleshooting.
  • Eligibility to obtain UK Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance; British Citizenship is required for this role.
Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience designing, building, and deploying cloud-based solution architectures.
  • Experience with standard IT security practices (such as encryption, certificates, key management and use of HSMs or other specialist security equipment).
  • Ability to execute in a customer-focused environment and advocate for partners and customers in a cross-functional organization.
  • Ability to work on a team to design processes, implement projects that solve business problems, and lead or work with cross-functional groups.
Responsibilities
  • Build, configure and deploy new compute, network, storage and specialist security infrastructure, ensuring correct configuration and bring into service in line with standard playbooks from Google product teams.
  • Resolve profile escalations and issues, improve the customer experience, and drive initiatives.
  • Manage the health and performance of the environment using observability tools, carry out maintenance and updates to roll out new features and keep the platform secure.
  • Participate in a 24/7, on-call rotation for incident response escalation within response and on-site Service Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Provide technical implementation support in customer environments, including guidance on implementation, and feasibility of cross-product integrations.
