Overview

We are currently looking for an Infrastructure Engineer – Networking to join our Technology Service & Operations function within the Digital & Technology group. The Technology & Service Operations function is responsible for managing the existing IT infrastructure – software, hardware, databases and other technology platforms; leading the support and maintenance of applications; developing and testing new applications and platforms; and handling cyber and information security for the Agency.

Role Summary

The Network Edge Engineer will play a key role in managing and delivering network projects and BAU tasks, with a particular focus on the edge of the network (e.g., campus environments). The role is critical to ensuring the stability, performance and security of the network edge during the MHRA’s significant infrastructure overhaul, including the deployment of new equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced expertise in network edge technologies and act as escalation point for complex issues.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and collaborate with other teams to align network edge initiatives with the overall IT strategy.
  • Lead and manage successful execution of network edge projects, ensuring delivery on time, within scope and aligned with MHRA’s IT strategy.
  • Take ownership of overall stability, performance and security of the network edge, managing campus LAN/WAN, Wi‑Fi and telephony.
  • Implement and maintain robust security protocols to safeguard network edge devices, ensuring compliance with security policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Proactively monitor and assess network performance, identify potential risks or weaknesses, and apply pre‑emptive solutions to minimise downtime.
  • Participate in the Agency's out‑of‑hours on‑call rota and receive on‑call payment based on frequency of participation.
Technical Skills and IT Systems
  • Local and global experience of Cisco Switching and Wi‑Fi networking.
  • Installing, managing and deploying Cisco Nexus and Catalyst switching.
  • Installing, managing and deploying Cisco Catalyst WLCs and 9000‑series Access points.
  • Using Cisco Catalyst Center to manage software and firmware versions.
  • Strong command‑line device management skills and experience via Catalyst Center.
  • Strong understanding of VLANs, IP VLSM.
  • Optional: using network management tool SolarWinds.
  • Understanding advanced switching diagnostics and redundancy (e.g., MTU, spanning tree, MAC address tables).
Leadership and Escalation
  • Serve as the main escalation point for junior network engineers, providing advanced troubleshooting and technical expertise.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, fostering a collaborative environment and encouraging skills development across the team.

Working Location and Hours

The role will be based either in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London, E14 4PU or in South Mimms, Hertfordshire. This role can only be worked in the UK. The Agency currently implements a flexible, hybrid way of working, requiring a minimum of 8 days per month on site (up to 12 days depending on role) to support collaboration and stakeholder engagement. The remainder of time may be worked remotely.

Hours of work: 37 hours (net) per week for full‑time staff (pro‑rated for part‑time).

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary: £46,160 per annum.
  • Digital Allowance: up to £12,823 per annum for exceptional candidates (non‑pensionable, subject to change).
  • Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme: Agency contributes £13,372.
  • Annual leave: 25 days on entry, rising to 30 days, plus 8 bank holidays.

  • Experience developing and maintaining relationships with suppliers, ensuring service and product delivery aligned with industry best practice.
  • Strong technical expertise in network edge technologies, including LAN/WAN, Wi‑Fi and network security.
  • Proficiency in configuring and managing Cisco or similar network infrastructure and implementing security protocols and best practices.
