Job description
Overview

At Engine by Starling, we are on a mission to find and work with leading banks around the world who have the ambition to build rapid growth businesses on our technology. Engine is Starling's software-as-a-service (SaaS) business. Two years ago we split out as a separate business. Starling has seen exceptional growth, built on our own modern technology from the ground up. This SaaS platform is available to banks and financial institutions worldwide, enabling innovative digital features and efficient back-office processes that have contributed to Starling's success. Our team is engineering-led, and we seek people excited by the potential for Engine’s technology to transform banking in different markets. Our values are: Listen, Keep It Simple, Do The Right Thing, Own It, and Aim For Greatness.

Hybrid Working

We have a Hybrid approach to working here at Engine. Our preference is that you’re located within a commutable distance of one of our offices to enable in-person collaboration.

About Engineering at Engine by Starling

Platform engineering is our passion. We deliver software that is reliable, scalable, reusable and maintainable. Our platform is expanding, bringing new challenges in how we deliver our SaaS. All engineers own features from inception through deployment to running in production. Using a first-principles approach, we break down problems and implement solutions across every stage of the lifecycle.

As an Engineer at Engine, you’ll help build, scale and deploy our first-in-class cloud-native banking platform to multiple cloud providers and regions globally. You will be encouraged to engage across all areas of our platform. We value a multi-discipline approach to engineering and a culture that supports that. Some disciplines you will be exposed to include:

  • Global Multi-Cloud Architectures
  • Toolchain Development
  • Build and Deployment Systems
  • Observability and Reliability
  • Runtime Orchestration; Control and Data Planes
  • SaaS API Management and Security
  • Core Java Platform

Don't worry if you don't tick every box below! We value curiosity, a willingness to learn, and a desire to work across multiple disciplines. If you're excited by the challenges of building and operating a global, cloud-native platform, we encourage you to apply.

We have a great team - read about our work with Women In Tech, a Day in the Life of a Software Engineer at Engine and our interview with our Staff Platform Engineer.

  • Design, document, build and maintain secure, reliable & scalable infrastructure on AWS
  • Take on a variety of projects and tasks covering multiple areas of engineering
  • Work with stakeholders to design hybrid-cloud systems – we use AWS and also co-locate Payment HSMs in physical data centres around the world
  • Ensure the performance and reliability of cloud environments whilst measuring cost-effectiveness
  • Respond promptly in-hours to technical incidents
  • Embrace automation and be reluctant for manual implementation
  • Implement security best practices ensuring platform compliance with ISO27001, SOC2 and PCI-DSS
  • Share knowledge with colleagues by writing technical documentation and leading training sessions
Requirements

Ideally you will be an inquisitive Infrastructure Engineer, with an aptitude for finding clean and simple solutions to technical problems. You will be passionate about building observable and reliable systems that impact the wider engineering organisation. The ideal candidate will have:
