Job summary

Job description

Role Purpose – Provide high quality service delivery to people who use substances and their significant others. Contribute to the overall performance of designated services to ensure contractual output targets and high clinical standards are achieved.

Key duties include:

  • Work as a registered health‑care professional (prescriber) in designated services.
  • Deliver health and wellbeing interventions, including prescribing, in line with legislation, best practice guidance and organisational documents.
  • Assist in developing systems, pathways and documents that promote holistic delivery of services (e.g., criminal justice, blood‑borne viruses).
  • Provide clinical management and support for people, encouraging access to education, employment and recovery support activities.
  • Collaborate with commissioners, suppliers and primary and secondary care services.
  • Participate in audits, monitoring and the implementation of recommendations.
  • Contribute to data collation, quality improvement and incident reporting.
  • Provide competency assessment and training, and support colleagues’ development.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and meet organisational and regulator revalidation requirements.

Provide advice and guidance on clinical issues to staff and partner agencies. Work with management to support a one‑team approach and, where relevant, provide clinical supervision.

Person specification

Essential:

  • Registered with NMC, HCPC or GPhC and a qualified independent prescriber.
  • Sound knowledge of prescribing for substance use, with experience in recovery, harm reduction and health promotion.
  • Demonstrable ability to deliver excellent service to vulnerable people with complex needs.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office, digital meeting platforms and case‑management systems.
  • Knowledge of health and social care regulatory requirements (CQC, NICE, etc.).
  • Commitment to partnership with other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and communicate effectively in various settings.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable:

  • Relevant postgraduate qualifications (e.g., RCGP Drugs Part 1/2, CMHP Credentialed).
  • Experience providing clinical services to people who use substances.
  • Experience in audits, incident and complaints management and professional development.
  • Professional affiliation (e.g., RCN, RPS, CMHP).
  • Experience in clinical supervision, line management and appraisals.
