Job description
Overview

Independent Non-Executive Chair role for WPP IM Co, established as an FCA-regulated investment management company serving eight Welsh Local Government Pension Scheme funds, managing more than £25 billion for 412,000 members. This is a strategic opportunity to help shape a permanent, world-class investment institution for Wales and to design and lead the investment capability of a new, regulated company at the heart of UKLGPS reform.

With Government backing and authorisation targeted for March 2026, WPP IM Co will operate to global standards with a Welsh purpose—combining professional excellence with a clear public mandate. Over time, the organisation will channel long-term pension capital into clean energy, affordable housing, innovation and other investments that strengthen Wales and the UK, demonstrating how responsible investment can serve members and communities.

The organisation is seeking its first Independent Non-Executive Chair to lead the Board through mobilisation and into operation. The Chair will set the tone for integrity, professionalism and public purpose, ensuring effective governance, strong fiduciary standards and trusted relationships with Government, regulators and shareholders.

You will lead a compact, high-calibre Board that brings together independent and shareholder directors alongside experienced executives. Working with the CEO and Board colleagues, you will help shape strategy, embed robust governance, and ensure WPP IM Co delivers for its investors, its members and for Wales.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a compact, high-calibre board consisting of independent and shareholder directors alongside experienced executives.
  • Work with the CEO and Board to shape strategy and embed robust governance.
  • Ensure the organisation delivers for its investors, members and for Wales, upholding integrity and fiduciary standards.
  • Build trusted relationships with Government, regulators and shareholders; act with political astuteness and integrity within a devolved nation context.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Experience as an independent non-executive director or chair; ability to provide strategic clarity and calm authority at board level; a steady, collaborative leadership style.
  • Ability to build trust across Government, regulators and markets; strong integrity and judgement; comfortable working in a devolved nation context.
  • Experience in investment management, pensions or financial services regulation.
  • Welsh connectivity or experience desirable; ability to speak Welsh is not essential but advantageous.
About the organisation and terms

Welsh connectivity or experience is desirable; the role offers £60,000 per year with an estimated commitment of approximately 25–30 days per year. The role covers Wales and the UK.
