The In The Field Internship has been devised to give an individual developing their practice within the realm of contemporary visual art experience of our residency programmes through assisting in managing our newly launching funded programme. There will also be the opportunity to support other initiatives that we are developing as archives of the programme. This includes the Pamphlet Series and the 21st Century Artist Recommended Library.
We expect this opportunity to be suitable for someone interested in expanding their practice to include artist support and organisational systems and strategy.
Hospitalfield is seeking applications from a dedicated and enthusiastic person who will join our team for the Internship this autumn which is roughly a month long. The chosen candidate will be expected to live on site for the duration, they will be provided with accommodation and all their meals. Working alongside our small, dedicated team you will be assisting with our residency programme and supporting the development of these other related initiatives. This is an opportunity to work with a small group of artists and to an insight into the principles of supporting practice through the day to day management of a specific programme. You will emerge with a clear understanding of what a powerful impact such time can be for artists and you will be able to recognise how you have played a part in helping Hospitalfield to deliver this important programme. You may also be asked to help with other elements of the programme including communications and events, you can find a non-exhaustive list of possible activities you may be asked to help with during the internship below.
Everyone working at Hospitalfield is on an hourly contract 37.5 hours per week – this will be your contribution. As this role does not fit neatly into a 9-5 you will work with Hospitalfield staff to devise a schedule. The ideal candidate will be flexible to being available in the evenings and at weekends and be able to manage their own schedule.
This role is ideal for someone who would value this opportunity as work experience within the visual arts. You may be interested in curatorial and arts administration, teaching, artist support roles. Our aim is to ensure that a new generation of people working in the arts are sensitive to the less visible support that artists need and that is essential to the far more visible aspects of an artists’ practice, which is about the presentation of completed work. This Internship should help to answer questions relating to the challenges that artists face in finding support for process, production, research and development, and the provision of space for conscious uncertainty and the opportunity to practice and to fail in order to succeed.
We are looking for applicants who can show within their application statement, that they understand these principles and that they will use the experience gained in this role to go to develop their own practice.
