Imaging Staff Nurse

Department Imaging and Interventional Radiology

Band 5 £31,049 - £37,796 Per annum, pro rata if part-time

Hours 37.5 Hours/week. All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Do you want the opportunity to be at the forefront of a developing specialty which has revolutionised patient care in a wide range of diseases? Do you want to develop skills in Interventional radiology, then this is the place for you!

This is an exciting opportunity to join Milton Keynes University Hospital Imaging Department as a new Imaging Scanning Centre is opening in 2026. The Imaging Department has also recently expanded with an introduction of two Community Diagnostic Centres at Lloyds Court and Whitehouse Park.

Interventional Radiology is a specialist field with many procedures such as vascular, biopsies, drainages and vascular line insertions performed with minimally invasive techniques using Fluoroscopy, CT-scan, and Ultrasound as modality, however nursing roles and responsibilities are required throughout the department.

The Nursing team works closely with Interventional Radiologists, Radiographers, Sonographers and the Clinical support team throughout the patient’s journey through the Imaging Department.

No previous experience in this imaging or radiology field is necessary, as full training will be given if successful.

The successful candidate will be a RN with a caring nature, with excellent verbal communication skills and ability organise and to use their initiative.

To ensure effective nursing input and participation wherever appropriate within Imaging. This involves delivery of patient care daily. Such delivery of care will be given whilst working within a wide range of radiology procedures (for example under computed tomography (CT), Interventional Radiology (IR), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound) as well as under professional guidelines.

The post requires a degree of flexibility to respond to the changing needs within the departments. Radiology is a 24/7 service and out of hours working may be required.

Clinical and Professional Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Independently manage patients and provide high standard care within the speciality collaborating with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to deliver individualised and personalised direct patient care.
  • Demonstrate adequate practice and specialist knowledge in the assessment, planning, and implementation of patient care. This will include history taking, physical examination, evaluate patients and relative’s needs, ensure patient is adequately prepared and safe for the agreed interventional procedure.
Communication and relationship building

The post holder will:

  • Be providing and receiving sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required. This may be because agreement or co-ordination is required or because there are barriers to understanding.
  • Communicate with patients, their relatives or other accompanying visitors to enable informed decision making.
Responsibilities for analysis

The post holder will:

  • Provide high standards of individualised nursing care for patients and their families by assessing, planning, and implementing and evaluating care.
  • Recognise and report appropriately any changes in patient’s condition and escalate appropriately.
Responsibilities for planning & organisation of activities

The post holder will:

  • Coordinate and organise own workload, in conjunction with the imaging nurse lead.
  • Be involved with varied IR lists to ensure work is carried out following principles of urgency and priority in a rapidly changing workflow setting.
Responsibility for Patient/ Client Care, Treatment and Therapy

The post holder will:

  • To demonstrate principles of patient safety by ensuring that all treatment and procedures are carried out by competent and appropriately trained staff.
  • To be a patients advocate.
Development of policies and services

The post holder will:

  • Uphold standards of safety and quality always putting the patient first and protecting them from harm
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Clinical Governance processes relevant to interventional radiology procedures.
Financial responsibility

The post holder will:

  • Contribute to the effective use and deployment of resources and staff to achieve optimum value for money without detriment to patient care.
  • Assist in maintaining all equipment and stock levels with due regard for economy and safety.
Managing people

The post holder will:

  • Be responsible for his/her actions and patient workload and be able to work unsupervised as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining a suitable and stimulating learning environment for the on-going professional development of registered staff.
Responsibility for information resources

The post holder will:

  • Use a variety of IT systems which are essential to the performance of their day-to-day work including CRIS, PACS and Cerner.
  • To ensure the accuracy of data quality in line with departmental policies and procedures (i.e. name, date of birth, address, postcode, GP and telephone number) are all current and correct.
Research and development

The post holder will:

  • Utilise skills to analyse and synthesise research findings and implement to deliver evidence-based practice within the clinical areas.
  • Participate in both clinical and organisational audit as required, to continually evaluate the effectiveness of the service.
Freedom to Act

The post holder will:

  • Work in accordance with the hospital and department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Be responsible for own Professional Accountability

The post holder will:

  • Have a flexible approach to how contracted hours of work are scheduled and work location.
  • Be prepared to participate in 24/7 imaging service delivery model.
