Job description

We are seeking experienced, fully accredited 4x Sonographers to support a NHS Health Board in Scotland by delivering a weekend ultrasound insourcing service.

Ultrasound Sonographer - Weekend Insourcing Service (East Scotland Region)
  • Contract Type: Insourcing Assignment
  • Department: Radiology - Weekend Ultrasound Service

  • Pay: £725/Day Outside Ir35

This service aims to expand diagnostic capacity and reduce waiting times across the region, operating from multiple ultrasound rooms within the local Radiology department. Sonographers will deliver high-quality scans within an agreed scope of practice, supported by on-site assistant staff and established booking/reception teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clinical Examinations
    • Perform a range of ultrasound examinations, including:
      • General abdominal and urinary studies
      • Gynaecology, including internal transvaginal (TV) examinations
      • Routine MSK scans, including soft tissue lumps
    • Exclusions: Head & neck; Paediatrics.
  • Reporting & Clinical Practice
    • Provide clear, accurate diagnostic reports in line with regional NHS protocols.
    • Escalate cases outside scope of practice or personal competency to the Health Board before verification and report issue.
    • Adhere strictly to local governance, infection control, and clinical standards.
  • Equipment & Competency
    • Confidently operate GE ultrasound systems.
    • Demonstrate competency with Trophon high-level disinfection processes.
    • Attend a half-day induction for equipment, workflow, and protocol familiarisation.
  • Quality & Governance
    • Participate in a 5% report audit as part of the quality framework.
    • Contribute to patient experience surveys and continuous improvement measures.
    • Ensure compliance with NHS Scotland data protection and GDPR requirements.
    • Maintain robust documentation and uphold professional standards at all times.
  • Team Collaboration
    • Work with Radiographers, Radiologists, AHPs, assistant staff, and local admin teams.
    • Support efficient workflow across multiple ultrasound rooms.
Essential Requirements
  • Accredited Sonographer with recognised UK ultrasound qualifications.
  • Proven competence in:
    • General abdominal/urinary
    • Gynaecology including TV
    • Routine MSK
    • Experience with GE systems and Trophon HLD processes.
  • Strong clinical decision-making and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced service.
Desirable Experience
  • Previous experience within NHS Scotland or equivalent acute environments.
  • Participation in insourcing, backlog clearing, or weekend diagnostic services.
  • Flexibility in high-volume, multi-room service models.
Service Details

This insourcing service will support a regional NHS Health Board in expanding weekend diagnostic capacity.
