Job summary

APEM Ltd. is seeking a Hydrometry Consultant to join our Freshwater Quality and Processes Division. This role is predominantly field-based, involving hydrometric data collection, installation and maintenance of monitoring equipment, and data analysis for reporting.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, liaising with clients and regulators as you develop projects and deliver high-quality hydrometric data and insights. Based near Stockport with UK travel.

Job description

Are you an experienced hydrometry professional who enjoys being out in the field?

Do you have hands‑on experience of hydrometric monitoring, equipment and surveying, and want to develop your career within a growing environmental consultancy?

We’re looking for a Hydrometry Consultant to join our Physical Data and Hydrometry Team within APEM’s Freshwater Quality and Processes Division.

This is a great opportunity to work on a wide range of water projects, including water company drought and water resources plans, water quality investigations, drought permit applications and monitoring programmes. You’ll be part of a wider multidisciplinary team of water and environmental specialists, working together to help protect people and the environment through high-quality hydrometric data collection and analysis.

The role is predominantly field-based, so if you enjoy getting out on site and working with monitoring equipment, this could be a great fit. You’ll be involved in hydrometric data collection, installing and maintaining monitoring and telemetry equipment, undertaking surveys and then processing, analysing and reporting on the data you collect.

Your existing hydrometry experience is really important to us. You may have experience with flow gauging techniques, continuous flow measurement, water level monitoring, telemetry or bathymetry, alongside wider surveying such as river cross sections or topographical surveys. We’re also interested in people who enjoy working with their hands and are confident using power and hand tools.

There’s plenty of variety too. You may have the opportunity to get involved in water quality and hydroecology monitoring, while working alongside specialists in water resources, hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and environmental assessment.

As you develop within the role, you’ll have the opportunity to build your experience beyond fieldwork, including client and regulator liaison, data analysis, report writing, tender development and project management. You’ll be supported by experienced colleagues while developing towards greater responsibility and independence.

Location – North

This role is ideally suited to someone based within easy travelling distance of Stockport, allowing you to access the team's equipment and support the practical requirements of the role.

The role will involve regular travel to client sites and field locations, so a full UK driving licence is essential.

You’ll need to bring

• Proven experience of hydrometric monitoring, analysis and reporting.
• Experience using environmental monitoring equipment and telemetry systems.
• Experience installing and maintaining monitoring equipment.
• Experience managing large datasets, including data entry, validation, error checking and resolution.
• Experience planning and delivering surveys and monitoring projects independently.
• A practical, hands‑on approach, including experience using power and hand tools.
• Experience working within technical project teams and delivering work on time and within budget.
• Good communication and report writing skills, with a strong team ethic.

It’s a bonus if you have

• A BSc or MSc in a relevant subject and at least two years' professional experience, ideally in a hydrometric role.
• Experience using GNSS and Total Station survey equipment.
• Experience carrying out river cross‑section or topographical surveys.
• Experience installing, maintaining and processing data from rainfall or weather stations.
• Experience of working at height, confined spaces, water safety or water hygiene.
• First Aid or CSCS certification.
• Membership of a relevant professional body, or working towards it.
