Job summary

University of Sheffield is seeking a Research Associate in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing to advance NLP and ML methods for detecting online misinformation. You will develop an AI-powered chatbot to aid journalists, policymakers, and other stakeholders while upholding ethical AI standards.

The role involves publishing in top journals, presenting at conferences, and collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams across the department and partner organisations.

Qualifications

• PhD or near completion in NLP, ML, or computational social science.
• Excellent track record in ML/NLP for social media and disinformation.
• Experience in chatbot or AI agent development.
• Proficiency in DL/NLP frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, Transformers, Hugging Face).
• A strong track record of scientific publications.
• Understanding of psychological inoculation principles.
• Experience in multidisciplinary co-design software development.
• Experience using LLMs and prompt engineering.
• Ability to collaborate with international collaborators.
• Creative problem-solving and project milestone management.

Responsibilities

• Apply NLP and ML to analyse online disinformation and social media streams.
• Develop an AI-powered chatbot with researchers from psychology and social sciences.
• Investigate large-scale social media data for patterns and bot activity.
• Set milestones, test methods, and maintain technical documentation.
• Collaborate with consortium partners and stakeholders for impact.
• Publish findings in top journals and present at conferences.
• Work with researchers across departments and partner organisations.
• Deliver training in NLP, ML, and chatbot development.
• Ensure ethical considerations and responsible AI practices.
• Contribute to dissemination and toolkits for stakeholders.
