Job summary

Historic England is seeking an Archaeological Conservator (Maritime) in Portsmouth with expertise in artefact conservation, marine environments and heritage science. The role includes analysing artefacts, reporting findings, and leading training and public engagement activities.

You will manage the Marine Conservation Facility, collaborate with universities and other organizations, and work in a role that combines fieldwork, research, and capacity-building, with hybrid working options.

Qualifications

• Professional qualifications (or equivalent experience) in conservation.
• Experience of conserving artefacts recovered from archaeological sites.
• Experience of using X-radiography and/or vacuum freeze drying.
• Experience in communicating complex research to wide audiences (including non-specialists).
• Excellent collaboration skills.
• Experience of providing training or mentoring in archaeological conservation.

Responsibilities

• Analyse, interpret and report artefactual assemblages and historic features on HE projects.
• Lead heritage science research supporting HE Strategic Plan.
• Develop and participate in public engagement activities.
• Manage the Marine Conservation Facility, including access, training and supervision of external users.
• Contribute to training to disseminate best practice and capacity in archaeological conservation.
• Collaborate with marine specialists across Historic England to deliver a seamless marine service.
