Job summary

CBRE is seeking an HVAC Engineer for Data Centre Solutions at Canary Wharf, London. You will maintain mission-critical cooling infrastructure and support Data Hall environments to ensure uptime and energy efficiency.

The Role

As an HVAC Technician for Data Centres (m/f/d), you will be responsible for the electrical and mechanical maintenance of data centre plant and equipment, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.

You will play a key role in maintaining HVAC systems, with a focus on cooling infrastructure supporting Data Hall environments.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience operating, maintaining and fault-finding Indirect Adiabatic Cooling (IAC) systems and supporting critical cooling infrastructure that underpins Data Centre operations.

You will contribute to site resilience, energy efficiency, cooling optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety, housekeeping and engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on HVAC plant, equipment and building services.
  • Fault find and maintain a wide range of HVAC systems, including VRV/VRF air conditioning systems.
  • Operate, maintain and optimise Indirect Adiabatic Cooling (IAC) systems serving mission-critical Data Hall environments.
  • Ensure cooling infrastructure operates efficiently and reliably to maintain Data Hall temperature and humidity within operational parameters.
  • Monitor cooling plant performance through BMS, EPMS systems.
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance, inspections and testing of IAC equipment, AHUs, heat exchangers, fans, pumps, valves and associated mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, controls and performance-related faults affecting critical cooling systems.
  • Support emergency response activities relating to cooling plant failures and critical infrastructure incidents.
  • Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) following equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
  • Verify cooling redundancy arrangements and resilience strategies remain effective and available.
  • Identify risks to plant and equipment, including critical spares management and lifecycle replacement planning.
  • Analyse plant performance trends and identify opportunities to improve reliability, energy efficiency and cooling performance.
  • Complete and improve preventative maintenance programmes.
  • Follow Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Permits to Work.
  • Use CAFM systems and mobile devices to manage maintenance tasks and asset information.
  • Use maintenance records, SOPs, MOPs, EOPs and technical documentation.
  • Review engineering drawings, P&IDs, schematics and control diagrams to support fault finding and maintenance planning.
  • Oversee and coordinate subcontractors and specialist service providers.
  • Liaise with onsite teams on building services and critical cooling infrastructure issues.
  • Manage engineering stores, maintenance materials and critical spare inventories.
  • Maintain accurate stock records using Excel spreadsheets, CAFM systems and inventory management tools.
  • Raise material requisitions for maintenance activities and ensure timely procurement of critical parts and consumables.
  • Maintain exceptional housekeeping standards within Data Halls, plant rooms, workshops and engineering stores, ensuring compliance with site standards and audit requirements.
Essential Requirements
  • Recognised or time-served apprenticeship.
  • Proven experience in HVAC maintenance within commercial, critical or Data Centre environments.
  • Strong mechanical competence (City & Guilds or equivalent).
  • F-Gas certification and experience handling refrigerants.
  • Multiskilled maintenance capability.
  • Excellent fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Extensive experience operating, maintaining and fault-finding Indirect Adiabatic Cooling (IAC) systems within mission-critical environments.
  • Strong understanding of:
  • Indirect Adiabatic Cooling systems
  • Air Handling Units (AHUs)
  • Heat Exchangers
  • Cooling coils and evaporative cooling technologies
  • Chilled water systems
  • HVAC controls and optimisation strategies
  • Water treatment processes
  • Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • PLC and control systems
  • Knowledge of Data Centre cooling architecture and environmental management principles.
  • Understanding of critical facility resilience concepts including N+1, 2N and concurrently maintainable infrastructure.
  • Experience monitoring and maintaining environmental conditions within critical Data Hall environments.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills with experience maintaining stock control records, spares inventories and maintenance reporting.
  • Proven experience managing critical spares, engineering stores and inventory systems.
  • Experience raising orders, sourcing materials.
  • Excellent housekeeping and organisational standards.
  • Experience supervising contractors effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work within a fast-paced critical environment.
Desirable Skills
  • Previous Data Centre, Critical Facilities or Mission Critical Environment experience.
  • Tier III or Tier IV Data Centre experience.
  • Manufacturer training on Vertiv, Stulz, Munters, Excool, Airedale or equivalent IAC equipment.
  • Working at Height certification.
  • IPAF and/or PASMA.
  • AP (Authorised Person) qualifications.
  • Advanced BMS experience and HVAC controls knowledge.
  • Experience with Siemens, Schneider Electric, Trend or Johnson Controls platforms.
  • Commissioning experience on critical cooling infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE Thermal Guidelines and Data Centre best practices.
  • Understanding of energy management and cooling system optimisation.
