Job description
Our mission

At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical, take-off and landing), 'zero emissions' aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.

We won't realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed, instead, we want to 'redefine' aerospace best practices.

We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.

What to expect

As a Health & Safety Officer, you will join a growing HSE team of passionate individuals whose primary focus is to support our HSE systems and ensure safe, efficient working in line with VA standards. This role is site-based due to the high demands and varied activities, with occasional travel to Bristol for support or training.

Working closely with the Site Responsible Person, HSE team, and on-site functions (Test, Powertrain, Logistics), you will help maintain a safe, risk-free environment and contribute to shaping the future of our expanding HSE operations.

A typical day could range from conducting site inspections and audits to delivering toolbox talks, investigating incidents with clear root cause identification, and liaising with external bodies to ensure compliance across all sites.

The ability to work under pressure, demonstrate resilience to change, and build strong professional relationships will all factor into this role's impact and your success.

What you'll do
  • You will arrange and conduct site inspections and audits to ensure compliance with H&S legislation and company standards, as well as highlighting opportunities for improvement.
  • You will support the reviewing of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and permits to work.
  • You will develop guidance and deliver toolbox talks for employees and subcontractors.
  • You will report and investigate accidents, near-misses, and incidents with a clear root cause identification and corrective actions recommendations.
  • You will maintain H&S documentation, records, and reporting in line with company standards.
  • You will attend HSE-related meetings, support with the creation of meetings packs and help record minutes if required.
  • You will provide guidance to site teams on H&S best practices and promote a positive safety culture and environmental awareness across all sites.
  • You will liaise with external bodies, subcontractors, and clients to ensure compliance. This will vary from arranging training, assessments, liaising with third party companies involved in an incident investigation.
  • You will have a set of objectives to support the department OKRs alongside your core responsibilities.
What you'll bring
  • Understanding or knowledge of UK HSE regulations, legislation and best practices (ideal).
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage all levels of staff.
  • Willingness to learn and undertake NEBOSH qualifications.
  • Able to work under pressure, resilient to changes and good problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, worked with SharePoint in the past.
  • Driving Licence and willingness to travel between sites.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and effectiveness in navigating and contributing to rapidly changing environments.
  • Exhibit resilience and the ability to recover and adjust swiftly in response to change.
  • Approach decision-making with a pragmatic, factual, and evidence-based mindset.
  • Possess outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain strong professional networks.
  • Able to create processes, with support, contributing to the development of the HSEMS.
  • Skilled at prioritising workload and maintaining focus on key departmental objectives to drive results.
Desirable experience
  • NEBOSH Diploma.
  • Good level of awareness around PowerBI and Jira.
  • Experience with ISO management systems (9001, 14001, 45001).
