Job description
Statement of Purpose

According to established procedures, cleans and services building area. Moves furniture, equipment, and supplies, in and around hospital departments; and performs a variety of environmental services duties to maintain the hospital in a neat, orderly, and sanitary condition.

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities
  • Selects cleaning materials and supplies and prepares solutions according to procedure. Loads service and housekeeping linen carts and transports to work area.
  • Cleans assigned areas by washing furniture, tile, fixtures, and equipment with germicidal cleaning solutions.
  • Cleans assigned areas by washing walls, doors, door frames, ceilings, vents, patient televisions, and windows.
  • If required to talk while cleaning infant's room, speaks softly.
  • Encourages child to communicate if circumstances permit; conducts cleaning duties in a friendly manner.
  • Talk to adolescent patient in a friendly and reassuring manner.
  • Communicates with geriatric patient in a friendly and reassuring manner; is aware of physical problems like poor eyesight or loss of hearing when communicating with patient.
  • Changes curtains, draperies, and cubicle curtains as assigned.
  • Sweeps and mops floor areas, vacuums carpets, spot‑cleans carpets, using appropriate solutions, and arranges furniture and equipment in an orderly fashion after cleaning assigned area.
  • Requests cleaning supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Operates various types of cleaning equipment both mechanical and electrical, i.e. buffers, wringers, scrubbers, vacuums.
  • Cleans equipment and notifies manager of equipment needing repair. Reports safety hazards to manager.
  • Returns unused supplies to janitor closet, cleans carts and equipment, and ensures all items are replaced in orderly manner.
  • May climb ladder to hang cubicle drapes, window drapes, or reach high areas for other cleaning purposes.
  • May collect waste from all areas of hospital and sanitize all garbage cans.
  • May collect or distribute soiled or clean linen.
  • May collect hazardous waste as established by Infection Control Committee. Transports infectious waste to a container in the Biohazard storage room.
  • Cleans Isolation Rooms after patient has been discharged.
  • Arranges furniture for meetings, workshops, and community affairs.
  • Cleans morgue after autopsy has been performed, using proper attire and solutions.
  • Deals with patients of all ages: neonatal, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
  • Must be physically fit to perform job requirements at all times, i.e. back problems where floor washing or bed washing cannot be accomplished.
  • May need to work days, evening, nights, or weekends when need arises.
  • Deals with patients on a friendly basis as housekeeper may be their only source of visitors besides nursing staff. Conversations must be limited to non-personal subjects and of short term. Must always show a positive attitude to cheer a patient and visitors as well.

Assists with Water Management Plan by flushing all hot/cold faucets and showerheads during the cleaning of rooms and spaces.

Working Conditions

Standing the majority of the day, with bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 lbs. and working with chemicals and infectious waste daily.

Job Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent. Between three and six months of on-the-job and/or related experience are normally sufficient.

Pay Information

$15.91-$19.52 hourly
