Job description

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

As a Senior Highways Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering technical excellence, innovation, and safety across a wide range of transportation projects. You’ll take ownership of key design deliverables, identifying opportunities for automation and process efficiencies, and ensuring scope changes are escalated appropriately to maintain programme and budget integrity.

You’ll collaborate closely with discipline leads and project stakeholders to produce high-quality outcomes, while also mentoring and supporting less experienced team members—helping to build capability and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

You will collaborate on the delivery of safe, practical and commercially sound highways design solutions for clients including National Highways, Transport Scotland, the Welsh Government, local authorities and major contractors. Depending on your experience and location, you could contribute to major transport programmes, local infrastructure improvements or complex projects.

Jacobs is a recognised leader in the transportation sector. We contribute to transformative mega-projects like King Khalid International Airport. Locally, we’re making a tangible impact in communities across the UK, delivering schemes for

  • Manchester Airport Group
  • United Utilities
  • Cheshire East Council
  • West Yorkshire Combined Authority
  • Worcestershire County Council
  • Birmingham City Council
  • Derbyshire County Council
  • West of England Combined Authority

With opportunities available across our growing hub locations in the UK, this is your chance to shape the future of transport infrastructure—both globally and in your own community.

Here's what you'll need
  • Design experience in transportation and the built environment
  • Attained a relevant professional qualification, for example a degree in engineering, and CEng/ IEng or equivalent qualifications or work experience.
  • Technical experience of delivering local and/or major highways projects or the land side alignment elements in adjacent markets such as Water Aviation or rail
  • Thorough understanding of commonly used design standards such as Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB), Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) or international equivalents.
  • Sound knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation and a passion for fostering safety and wellbeing.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a global multi-disciplinary team.
