Job summary

West Sussex County Council is seeking a Highways Inspector to help maintain and improve the safety of the county’s highway network. Based at Clapham Depot, Worthing, you'll work full-time (37 hours) with some part-time job-share options, and travel to sites across Horsham and Crawley.

You will conduct regular inspections, assess defects, coordinate with contractors for repairs, and contribute to long-term maintenance planning.

Qualifications

• Sound communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent literacy and numeracy skills.
• Sound problem solving skills with the ability to analyse complex issues and make logical and rational decisions based on all information available.
• The ability to stay calm when dealing difficult situations.
• Good professional observational skills in order to locate faults in the highway and ability to keep accurate records in order to document findings.

Responsibilities

• Inspect highway conditions and defects.
• Raise safety repair works with contractors.
• Provide feedback on asset condition to support long-term maintenance planning.
• Represent WSCC in relation to third-party liability claims, including attendance at court hearings when required.
• Conduct regular walking and cycling inspections and enforce highway legislation.
