Job summary

WSP is seeking a Highways Engineer to join our Local Government teams in Exeter or Taunton. You will contribute to significant highway, bridge and infrastructure projects across the county, delivering high quality design solutions.

You will work with a supportive multidisciplinary team, applying your knowledge to ensure projects meet programme, budget and technical standards while developing your career within a leading global firm.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience in highway design.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across project stages.
  • Technical knowledge: road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage, road restraint systems, signs/markings.
  • Proficiency in design software: Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.

Responsibilities

  • Develop highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through various stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Ensure projects are delivered to programme, budget, technical standards and legal requirements.
  • Assist Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input, pricing of briefs, proposals and cost estimation.
  • Prepare design documentation, drawings, reports and technical submissions.
  • Work across a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with clients, stakeholders and internal teams to ensure successful delivery.
  • Support site-based activities, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance.

About the role...

We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Engineer to join WSP Local Government teams based in either our Exeter or Taunton offices. You’ll be part of a highly collaborative team delivering a wide range of significant highways, bridges, and infrastructure projects across the County for several Local Authority clients in the region.

Based in WSP’s Exeter or Taunton offices you will work within a team of established professionals with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the management of highways related construction in the county. You will be further supported by colleagues from across WSP who provide additional resources and specialist expertise to deliver high quality services.

Working closely with colleagues across our Local Government team, and our wider multi-disciplinary teams, you will play a key role in the technical delivery of projects; contributing your expertise to ensure high-quality, efficient, and innovative design solutions.

  • Supporting site-based activities on an ad hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
  • A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
  • A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across different project stages.
  • Technical knowledge in areas such as road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs/road markings.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.
