Job summary

Amey is offering a Highways Maintenance Apprentice role based in the UK, with a starting salary of £29,904 per year. This 21-month Lead Traffic Management Operative Level 2 apprenticeship includes support from Amey and a partnered college.

You will work on maintenance and incident response across Area 7, with rotating day and night shifts, driving responsibilities, safety focus, and progression into a long-term career within Amey.

Qualifications

• Apprenticeship-based role with Lead Traffic Management Operative Level 2 training.
• Must be 18 years or older and hold a valid UK driving licence.
• Successful candidates will complete a BPSS check and undergo random drug/alcohol testing.
• If under 19 with no Maths or English, functional skills may be required.

Responsibilities

• Carry out routine and cyclic maintenance activities.
• Undertake minor civil works, drainage works and carriageway patching.
• Maintain high technical standards and attend project briefings.
• Drive and operate vehicles and plant with required skills.
• Carry out vehicle checks and recording of defects before each shift.
• Carry out other highway maintenance activities including winter maintenance.
• Prioritize safety for yourself and others per health and safety rules.
• Accurately record drivers' hours and resources in the operating system.
• Keep records and liaise with Amey staff, subcontractors, emergency services and public.

Starting Salary: £29,904 per annum (Subject to review)

Location: Sandiacre Depot, Bostocks Lane, Sandiacre, Nottingham, NG10 5ND

Working hours per week: Monday to Friday, 45 hours per week (rotating day and night shifts).

Start date: April 2027

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled on a Lead Traffic Management Operative Level 2 apprenticeship, which will take approximately 21 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered college and your Amey team, with one-to-one advice, e-learning materials, mentoring and experienced colleagues on hand to help you learn, ask questions and build your technical knowledge.

What You Will Do

• Carry out routine and cyclic maintenance activities.
• Undertake minor civil works, drainage works and carriageway patching.
• Maintain high technical standards and attend project and work briefings as required.
• Drive and operate vehicles and plant requiring general and specialist skills.
• Carry out vehicle checks, routine maintenance such as oil and water checks, cleaning and accurate recording of defects before starting each shift.
• Carry out other highway maintenance activities, including litter picking, winter maintenance and emergency call-out operations.
• Take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others in your team, ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and safe operations to protect members of the public.
• Accurately record drivers' hours, time and resource utilisation in line with the operating allocation system.
• Keep records, complete all necessary paperwork, and communicate and liaise with Amey employees, subcontractors, emergency services, the police, members of the public, clients and customers.

What You Will Bring

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, keen tolearnand ready to build their confidence in a supportive team.

• If under 19 years with no Maths & or English, candidate will have to complete functional skills.
• Full UK driving licence.
• BPSS check requirement.
