Job summary

ALTEN UK is seeking a Senior Civil & Structural Engineer to support major infrastructure programmes in highly regulated environments. You will focus on civil design solutions for roads, highways, pavements, and related infrastructure, contributing across the project lifecycle.

The role requires delivering designs, coordinating across disciplines, and ensuring regulatory compliance while mentoring junior engineers in a hybrid on-site environment.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in the design and assessment of roads, highways, pavements, and related civil infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of design processes, design substantiation, technical reporting, and assurance requirements.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Ability to coordinate technical interfaces across multiple disciplines.
• Proficiency with civil engineering design and modelling software.
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Deliver civil engineering design, analysis, and assessment for roads, highways, pavements, drainage, and related infrastructure.
• Produce, review, and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and design documentation.
• Develop design substantiation and provide technical justifications to meet project and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with structural, geotechnical, drainage, environmental, transportation, and other disciplines for integrated designs.
• Support design reviews, technical assurance, and resolution of engineering queries during delivery.
• Ensure outputs comply with industry codes, standards, quality, and HSE regulations.
• Contribute to risk identification, mitigation, and engineering governance processes.

Job Description

ALTEN UK is seeking a Senior Civil & Structural Engineer to support major infrastructure and engineering programmes within highly regulated and safety-critical environments. This role focuses on the delivery of civil engineering design solutions, with a particular emphasis on roads, highways, access routes, pavements, and associated infrastructure.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team, contributing to the development of innovative, technically sound, and compliant engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.

• On Site: Hybrid 3x onsite
• Experience Level: MidLevel

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver civil engineering design, analysis, and assessment for roads, highways, access routes, pavements, drainage, and associated infrastructure.
• Produce, review, and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, technical reports, and design documentation.
• Develop design substantiation and provide technical justifications to support project requirements and regulatory compliance.
• Work closely with structural, geotechnical, drainage, environmental, transportation, and other engineering disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions.
• Support design reviews, technical assurance activities, and the resolution of engineering queries throughout project delivery.
• Ensure all engineering outputs comply with applicable industry codes, standards, quality requirements, and health & safety regulations.
• Contribute to risk identification, mitigation activities, and engineering governance processes.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives, knowledge sharing, and the development of junior engineers and graduates.
• Maintain effective communication with internal stakeholders and project teams to manage technical interfaces and project deliverables.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

• Proven experience in the design and assessment of roads, highways, pavements, and associated civil infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of engineering design processes, design substantiation, technical reporting, and assurance requirements.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• Ability to manage technical interfaces and coordinate engineering activities across multiple disciplines.
• Proficiency with relevant civil engineering design and modelling software.
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Required Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, orequivalentmilitary experience.
• Knowledge or experience of American engineering codes and standards.
• Experience working within regulated or safety-critical industries.
• Experience within the nuclear sector, defence, energy, transportation, or major infrastructure programmes.
• Previous involvement in large‑scale engineering or new‑build projects.
• Chartered Engineer status or advanced progress towards professional registration.
