Job summary

A leading healthcare provider in the UK is looking for a highly specialist Speech and Language Therapist with expertise in deafness. This role involves providing high-level therapy and intervention for deaf children and young people, collaborating with multiple agencies to ensure holistic support. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in this area, including a recognized degree in Speech and Language Therapy. A passion for high-quality care and training others is essential. The position offers a permanent contract with a salary range of £47,810 to £54,710 per annum, pro-rata.

Qualifications

  • Significant post-qualification experience working as an SLT with children and young people.
  • Experience of multi-agency working, including education and SEND services.
  • Experience working in a clinical leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, advice and therapy to children and young people with hearing impairment.
  • Deliver training within schools as required.
  • Provide written reports and contribute to the EHCP assessment process.

Skills

Main duties of the job

You will provide Speech and Language Therapy at a highly specialist level, within the area of deafness, functioning in partnership with other agencies and disciplines to support in the holistic assessment, diagnosis and intervention for children and young people known to the service. You will demonstrate clinical leadership in deafness and represent the local team/service area in appropriate meetings to support and develop quality services for deaf children and young people within Luton in an integrated partnership model.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide assessment, advice and therapy where appropriate to children and young people with hearing impairment with and without EHCPs across Luton
  • Provide intervention and support to those deaf children and young people who attend deaf specialist provisions in the mainstream schools and those who are supported by peripatetic Teachers of the Deaf either in their home environment or in their pre-school or school setting.
  • To provide regular reports on activities and outcomes of interventions to LBC
  • To identify, assess and diagnose communication impairments and select appropriate therapy for effective treatment.
  • To provide written reports and contribute to the EHCP assessment process as required.
  • Contributing to annual reviews/case conferences and meetings as required
  • Gain extensive clinical experience and expertise to improve and further develop specialist skills through training, support and study
  • Provide second opinions to less experienced colleagues
  • Be responsible for providing ongoing training and advice to the wider Speech and Language Therapy team, school teaching assistants/communicators SENCOs and teachers and volunteers
  • Devise and deliver training to parents as appropriate.
  • Deliver training within the school environment as required.
  • Contribute to the support of newly and recently graduated SLT Staff
  • Measure the impact of the work within the HIP service and provide reporting data as required.
  • Take responsibility for service wide developments as appropriate.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Recognised S< Degree or equivalent Evidence of training in clinical specialist area. RCSLT membership Registered with HCPC
  • Competent in using basic British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups.
Experience
  • Significant post-qualification experience working as an SLT with children and young people
  • Experience delivering assessment and intervention for deaf and hearing-impaired children
  • Experience of selecting, administering and interpreting a range of assessment tools relevant to deafness
  • Experience of multi‑agency working, including education and SEND services
  • Experience working within specialist deaf provisions or peripatetic services
  • Experience providing training or advice to Teachers of the Deaf, school staff and parents
  • Experience working in a clinical leadership or advisory role
Skills
  • In‑depth knowledge of speech, language and communication development in deaf children
  • Understanding of the educational and clinical impact of deafness across childhood and adolescence
  • Knowledge of relevant SEND legislation and national guidance
  • Strong organisation, prioritisation and time‑management skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Understanding of the roles of other professionals working within deaf services
