Job summary

Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join our education service as the secondary and post-16 lead, supporting schools across Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea. This part-time role is 30 hours per week across four days.

You will work with children and young people with speech, language and communication needs within mainstream schools and Youth Justice Service.

Qualifications

• Degree in Speech and Language Therapy and RCSLT registration.
• Current HCPC registration required.
• Experience with children and young people in education settings.

We’re excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our dynamic education service as the secondary and post-16 lead supporting schools across the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.
This is a part-time role working 30 hours per week across four days.

This role offers the chance to work with children and young people (CYP) who have a range of speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) within mainstream schools and alternative provisions. The post also includes 2 days per week working within the Youth Justice Service.

You’ll collaborate closely with both the mainstream school’s team and multi-disciplinary professionals to deliver a tailored service that supports children and young people and their families.

As a Band 7 SLT, your responsibilities will include:

• Providing highly specialised clinical support: Work with CYP experiencing developmental speech and language, disorders, and social communication differences . You’ll use your specialist knowledge in specific areas of speech, language, and communication needs to provide targeted interventions.
• Collaborating with families and staff: Partner with parents, carers, and school staff to enhance the communication skills of children and ensure they can fully participate in the curriculum.
• Supporting SEND responsibilities: Contribute to statutory assessments of Special Educational Needs (SEN) as per the Children and Families Act 2014. You’ll also help deliver speech and language therapy as outlined in children’s Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
• Professional accountability: Take responsibility for your professional actions, recognising your boundaries and seeking advice from senior colleagues when necessary.
• Mentorship and supervision: Provide support to less experienced colleagues and students, including offering second opinions, supervision, and peer review.
• Liaising with external agencies: Work closely with colleagues from a variety of statutory and non-statutory agencies to ensure a holistic approach to each child’s care.

Education/Qualification

• Degree or equivalent and Licence to Practice – Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
• Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
• Further study in clinical field, including completion of short courses and additional study

Experience

• Work with CYP with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties including those associated with complex needs
• Collaborative work with parents and other professionals, across settings
• Training/Experience of supporting others including more junior therapists
• Experience of supporting children, families and schools in line with the Children and Families Act 2014 including contribution to statutory assessments (Education Health and Care Plan Needs Assessments), contribution to the annual review process and delivery of SLT provision as specified in Education health and Care Plans (EHCPs
• Experience working within Youth Justice Service

Skills & Knowledge

• Knowledge of typical child development of Speech & Language and general developmental milestones
• Advanced knowledge of appropriate range of assessments and interventions for education and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits to individual children

• Knowledge of religious, cultural and linguistic issues impacting upon caseload management
• In-depth knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to education including the Children and Families Act 2014 and education practice and policy
• Knowledge of service models to Education
• In-depth knowledge of the principles of clinical governance /audit
• Understanding of the roles of other professionals (relevant to the client group) especially within MDT
• Knowledge of professional standards of record keeping
