Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

We are looking for an experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly multidisciplinary team at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Homerton Hospital (RNRU). We welcome applications from candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds to improve our representation of communities that we serve.

The RNRU service provides specialist level 1B neurorehabilitation to people with severe and complex brain injury from northeast London and southeast England. The service is based in a 27‑bedded inpatient unit on the Homerton Hospital site in Hackney, London.

This maternity cover offers a rare opportunity to join the team at a highly specialist level, including providing supervision to SLT colleagues and participating in leading objective swallowing assessment clinics. You will be supervised by the band 8a SLT Lead on the team, Alex Henson.

Main duties

The post-holder will have the opportunity to further develop clinical skill in specialist intensive neuro‑rehabilitation. The caseload includes working with people with a full range of neurological communication and dysphagia presentations, including those with behavioural needs.

The post-holder will manage a specialist speech and language therapy caseload as an autonomous practitioner, as well as providing clinical supervision for junior colleagues.

Person Specification
Education and training
  • Degree level or equivalent Speech and Language Therapy Qualification recognised by the HCPC, RCSLT
  • Advanced training / short courses in specialist clinical area / management HCPC registration / licence to practice
  • Further study in related communication diagnoses eg aphasia, cognitive communication disorder
  • Further study in acquired neurogenic dysphagia
  • Specific training in supervision and/or leadership and/or QI
Experience
  • Broad experience in neurological settings including working with adults with acquired brain injury.
  • Experience of working in a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Experience of working with culturally diverse ethnic groups adapting and of assessment and intervention accordingly.
  • Experience of referral and participation in objective swallow assessment
  • Experience of vocational rehabilitation: return to work and/or education
  • Working with clients and/or family systems with diverse needs
  • Experience of leading objective swallowing assessment
  • Experience of leading service development/QI projects
  • Experience of supervising qualified staff
Knowledge
  • Expert level of knowledge in the field of adult acquired neurology, particularly with complex cognitive, communication, swallowing and behavioural presentations.
  • Wide ranging knowledge of formal and informal assessment of acquired neurological communication and dysphagia presentation in ABI
  • Knowledge of national guidelines and legal requirements in line with acquired brain injury caseload.
  • Knowledge of service development and evaluation
Skills and abilities
  • Ability to assess and treat patients presenting with communication problems of neurological origin with complex needs and challenging behaviour
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: Demonstrate effective communication skills with all disciplines and service users to optimise management.
  • Able to manage caseload and to prioritise under pressure for self and team.
  • Advanced skills in devising and delivering training including to colleagues, service users and families
