Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and versatile team player to join our therapy team within the Surgical & Vascular Team.

The Royal London Hospital is offering a senior physiotherapist fixed‑term post (12 months, full‑time) to work in a specialist role in the advanced assessment, treatment and clinical management of patients with vascular disease and those post‑surgery, including major amputations.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for physiotherapy; excellent communication skills, plenty of initiative and enthusiasm, and the ability to work autonomously and as part of the wider multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership across the RLH Surgical & Vascular pathway.

Undertake a team‑leader role, working alongside the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist and fellow Band 7 therapists to plan, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate the physiotherapy service for patients across the pathway.

  • Lead assessment, treatment and management of patients with vascular, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory, neuro/gyne‑oncology and neurological conditions, including those who have undergone major amputations.
  • Occasionally cover a range of specialities: general surgery, elective orthopaedics, gynae‑oncology, neuro‑surgery, neuro‑oncology, trauma.
  • Communicate effectively with other health‑care professionals, social services and external agencies regarding patient care, progress, and rehabilitation or discharge planning.
  • Be responsible for day‑to‑day clinical and operational management, ensuring professional delivery of the physiotherapy service.
  • Develop the service to meet changing health and social care agendas; provide clinical leadership and skill development to the team.
  • Deputise for and support the Clinical Lead Physiotherapist when required.
Essential Qualifications
  • Degree/Equivalent in Physiotherapy.
  • HCPC registration.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or pursuing a postgraduate qualification in a relevant clinical or leadership field.
  • Leadership or management qualification (e.g. Mary Seacole, ILM or equivalent).
Essential Experience
  • Extensive experience managing patients with vascular, renal surgical, orthopaedic, respiratory, neuro/gyne‑oncology and neurological conditions.
  • Experience with patients who have had major amputations.
  • Knowledge of a range of clinical conditions in the acute setting, particularly in vascular and renal failure.
  • Extensive acute inpatient and rehabilitation experience within the NHS.
  • Experience in staff supervision and leading a team.
  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio, including attendance at postgraduate courses and relevant training.
Desirable Experience
  • B6 level or equivalent ITU experience.
  • Knowledge of current NHS strategy, framework and NICE guidelines guiding practice.
  • Experience in outpatient amputee settings.
  • Experience using the PPAM (Pneumatic Post Amputation Mobility) Aid with a patient.
Essential Skills
  • Ability to assess, treat and appropriately discharge patients after surgery, including those with complex presentations, using evidence‑based practice.
  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritise, organise and delegate a caseload of complex patients.
  • Ability to identify deteriorating function and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to work within and lead a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Ability to self‑reflect, demonstrate continual learning and provide formal teaching to staff and colleagues.
  • Strong IT skills, including Microsoft programmes and electronic patient records.
Desirable Skills
  • Ability to lead and deliver service improvement projects.
  • Ability to lead an audit and deliver learning points.
