Responsibilities
To carry out vehicle maintenance tasks ensuring legal compliance of the fleet, including planned and preventative work as well as unscheduled maintenance and ensuring that all maintenance works and repairs are documented on the company's chosen software for vehicle maintenance records.
- Inspect, diagnose and repair vehicle faults to the company's expected high standards as set out in DVSA's guide to maintaining roadworthiness.
- Document all works carried out on the company's chosen software for vehicle maintenance records.
- Maintain vehicles and equipment in a timely manner with no undue delays.
- Achieve a 100% MOT first‑time pass rate, but no less than the 95% national average.
- Attend vehicle breakdowns at the roadside or customer premises to repair mechanical breakdowns, request further diagnosis in the workshop or communicate the need for recovery where required.
- Maintain effective and constructive communication with other key colleagues daily.
- Minimise downtime of vehicles and ensure vehicles are available for the Service Delivery Department at the earliest opportunity.
- Obtain correct authorisation for any expenditure and submit accurate parts requests to avoid delays.
- Wear correct PPE where required in the workshop and report defective equipment immediately.
- Assist the Workshop Supervisor in carrying out scheduled equipment checks.
- Ensure general housekeeping is carried out and the workshop is kept clean and tidy.
- Communicate any workshop issues to your Workshop Supervisor or Transport Manager.
- Carry out any other tasks as instructed by Senior Management.
Required Skills & Experience
- Organisational skills – keeping maintenance records up to date and compliant, capable of adapting to operational challenges.
- Good understanding of current legislation and keeping up to date with any changes.
- Pro‑proactive and initiative‑driven – able to think of solutions to problems and improve company efficiency.
- Approachable attitude – able to build good relationships with colleagues, contractors and suppliers.
- Experience in an HGV/LGV workshop.
- Operators Licence Vehicle Maintenance Compliance.
- Knowledge of DVSA's Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness and defect categorisation.
- Knowledge of transport operations and operator licensing requirements.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient IT skills.
- IRTEC Inspection Technician qualification (or to be provided within the first six months of employment).
- Category C driver's licence.
Desired Skills, Experiences & Qualifications
- Experience in the Waste Industry.
- Use of electronic diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge of vehicle ADR regulations concerning the carriage of dangerous goods by road.
- IOSH Working Safely certification.
- Category CE driver's licence.
