Job description

Powys County Council’s Highways, Transport & Recycling service is responsible for maintaining a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, ranging from mowers to 32‑tonne trucks. The Fleet & Transport team ensures compliance with DVSA standards and delivers a high‑quality maintenance service to support the council’s operations.

Role: HGV Technician

We are seeking a skilled HGV Technician to carry out inspections, servicing, fault diagnosis, and repairs on HGVs, LGVs, and specialist vehicles, as well as plant equipment within the council’s fleet. This role is vital in ensuring compliance with the Council’s Operator’s Licence and maintaining roadworthiness standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake preventative maintenance inspections, servicing, MOT preparation, and parts replacement.
  • Support the Fleet Operations Supervisor in delivering a customer‑focused inspection and maintenance service.
  • Provide out-of-hours support during winter and bank holidays as required.
  • Maintain accurate records using the Fleet Management system, including inspection sheets and repair logs.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to identify faults and complete repairs, including road testing where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with DVSA standards, council policies, and health & safety requirements.
  • Promote preventative maintenance to minimise downtime and avoid unnecessary vehicle hires.
  • Mentor apprentices and support training programmes as required.
  • Maintain workshop housekeeping to a high standard, ensuring a safe and tidy environment.
Qualifications
  • Experience in heavy vehicle or heavy plant maintenance.
  • Experience in vehicle inspection to DVSA standards.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge across a broad range of vehicles, machinery, and tools.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic equipment and health & safety practices.
  • Accredited qualification in vehicle/heavy plant repair and maintenance to QCF Level 3, or IRTEC Advanced Technician licence, or DVSA Nominated Tester.
  • Full valid Category B driving licence.
  • Full Category C licence or ability to attain within 2 years of probation.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and future training.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong problem‑solving and communication skills.
