Job summary

A logistics company in Peterborough is seeking an experienced HGV Fitter / HGV Technician to maintain and repair a fleet of heavy goods vehicles. Job description
HGV Fitter / HGV Technician

Location: Peterborough

Job Purpose: To maintain, service, and repair a fleet of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to ensure they are roadworthy, safe, and compliant with DVSA regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and servicing of HGVs in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Conduct MOT preparations and inspections.
  • Complete vehicle inspections and safety checks (PMIs).
  • Maintain accurate service records and job sheets.
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify issues.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Respond to breakdowns and carry out roadside repairs when required.
  • Liaise with parts suppliers and order necessary components.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • NVQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience as an HGV technician/fitter.
  • Valid UK driving licence (HGV Class 1 or 2 preferred).
  • Good understanding of DVSA standards and vehicle compliance.
  • Experience with diagnostic equipment and software.
Desirable Skills
  • IRTEC accreditation.
  • Welding and fabrication skills.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Working Conditions
  • Workshop-based with occasional roadside assistance.
  • May involve shift work, weekends, or on-call duties.
