Job summary

A recruitment agency is seeking an HGV Driver/Refuse Team Leader for a public sector client in Northern Ireland. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving refuse collection vehicles, supervising operatives, and ensuring safety protocols. Essential qualifications include a valid DVTA Driver Qualification and Digital Tachograph Card, along with at least one year of relevant experience in driving Category C vehicles and customer service. This is a fixed-term contract with a pay rate of £14.12 per hour, 37 hours a week.

Qualifications

  • 1 year of relevant experience in driving Category C vehicles.
  • 1 year of experience in operating mechanical lifting equipment/hoist.
  • Experience in dealing with the public in a customer service capacity.

Responsibilities

Job description

Ashton Recruitment require an HGV Driver/Refuse Team Leader our Public Sector Client based in Armagh.


Position: HGV Driver/Refuse Team Leader
Location: Banbridge but may be expected to work at Depots across the Borough
Duration: Fixed term contract for 3 months, may be extended
Pay Rate: Scale 4 £14.12 per hour

Hours of work: 37 hours per week - Mon & Tue 7am - 3pm

Duties will include:
  • Drive and manoeuvre the vehicle to the collection points of all refuse containers.
  • Depending on operations either:
    • Empty contents of the vehicle at the landfill site or the Community Recycling Centre;
    • Drive vehicle to landfill site, composting or recycling plants as appropriate and offload contents in accordance with procedures in place at the relevant facilities.
  • Supervision of assigned operatives. Ensure that assigned operatives fulfil their duties in full and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the waste collection vehicle and carry out checks each morning using the relevant check sheet and report any defects or damage to the vehicle to the Mechanics/Operations Supervisor.
  • Wash the vehicle externally each week and ensure the interior is adequately cleaned between bin collections to avoid contamination of loads that are consigned to the composting facility.
  • Retain a level of knowledge on the operation of the brown bin and kerbside dry recyclable collection services and provide advice to householders on same as required.
  • As appropriate help resolve complaints/ service requests from the public regarding waste collection and report to the Supervisor any issues that cannot be directly resolved.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure the completion of allocated daily schedules.
  • Where appropriate, deal directly with any matter reported by waste collection operatives in fulfilment of their duties, and in all other instances forward matters to the Supervisor for attention.
  • Report all accidents to the Supervisor.
Essential Criteria:
  1. Valid DVTA Driver Qualification Card;
  2. Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
  3. 1 year's relevant experience in each of the following areas:
  4. Driving Category C vehicles;
  5. Operating mechanical lifting equipment/hoist;
  6. Dealing with the public in a customer service capacity;
  7. Completing accurate records of scheduled and completed work
  8. Excellent communications skills;
  9. Ability to work as part of a team;
  10. Ability to work on own initiative;
  11. Ability to provide excellent customer service;
  12. Health and Safety focused.
  13. Ability to follow clear instructions
  14. Full current driving licence (valid in the UK) including entitlement to drive Category C vehicles (over 3500kg).
Desirable:
  1. Experience in refuse collection and/ or recycling centre duties.
