About the role

This position is a Lead role across a small number of highways maintenance operational teams, preparing, organising, and leading highways operatives completing routine, non-routine, or larger scale construction, highway works.

Motivate and lead colleagues by example, improve standards and compliance with Risk assessments, Health and Safety and technical highways details.

Take a lead role in the winter maintenance service delivery and out of hours emergency service for highways operations.

What you will do

Lead small teams responsible for a wide range of highways, grounds, and street scene construction and maintenance tasks, including winter maintenance, ensuring all work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard.

Respond to emergency situations (e.g. unforeseen road conditions, assisting emergency services with access), maintaining a strong focus on safety, clear communication, and effective coordination during prolonged periods of adverse weather and unsocial hours.

Use initiative to improve work methods, re-prioritise tasks to meet operational goals, and apply sound problem-solving and decision-making—always in full compliance with health & safety regulations and best practice.

Deliver focused job chats and toolbox talks to operational teams, reinforcing safe working practices and promoting a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.

Undertake thorough risk assessments and ensure all team members understand and consistently follow safety procedures as directed by the HGSS Works Supervisor.

Carry out winter road maintenance services—including precautionary salting, patrolling, road condition assessments, and snow clearance—executed with precision, safety, and efficiency, often under challenging conditions and outside normal working hours. There is no DBS check requirement for this position.
