Overview

An exciting opportunity as a healthcare assistant has arisen in our Private Patient Outpatient Department in Sutton. This is a department which sees a variety of patients with both solid tumours and haematological cancers.

The ideal candidate will have experience in an outpatient setting, including phlebotomy skills. They will be proactive, motivated and committed to a high standards of patient care and service. The successful candidate will work closely with consultants and the nursing team to ensure the smooth running of clinics and make sure that patients receive the best possible experience whilst upholding the Trust’s values of pioneering change, pursuing excellence, working collaboratively and showing kindness.

The successful candidate will have a unit induction on how to support consultants in clinics, and patients on their pathway through our service and other services in the Trust that they might be referred to. They will also be allocated to the phlebotomy room where they will work alongside the private medical day unit team in taking blood, and monitoring observations prior to treatments. Further trainings will be available according to the candidate’s needs.

Responsibilities

To carry out in a responsible and efficient way, the nursing care for patients which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.

Monitoring and recording patients’ vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and reporting any abnormal results to registered nursing staff.

Measuring and recording patients’ height and weight.

Performing venepuncture and cannulation after training and assessment of competency.

Undertakes clinical tasks relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off, for example, ECG, urinalysis, MRSA screening swabs, recording of allergies on EPR and other clinical tasks where training/competency sign off deemed appropriate for HCSW.

To assist the smooth running of a consultant led clinic; this includes the following tasks:

  • conducting a handover with the Consultant
  • preparing patient information and referral forms as required
  • bringing patients to and from the waiting room for their appointment
  • be present in the room during the consultation

Liaising with the trusts MDT as appropriate to ensure complete holistic care is provided.

Demonstrates an understanding of infection control issues including attendance at mandatory training; an understanding of policy and procedure and accept responsibility for their own infection control practice and a willingness to challenge others’ practice.

Demonstrates and understanding of nursing care plans and utilise them in line with Trust policy and procedure.
