Overview
Plan, prepare and perform a range of standard and highly specialist neurophysiological investigations on a diverse patient population. Contribute to data analysis, interpretation and evidence-based practice development, including departmental/regional audits and protocols. Work effectively as a team member with patient-centered service delivery.
Responsibilities
- To plan, prepare and perform a range of standard and highly specialist neurophysiological investigations on a diverse range of patients as required.
- Analyze and prepare/edit data for interpretation by senior colleagues.
- Carry out training and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate student clinical physiologists and other healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to the development of evidence-based practice, including departmental/regional audits and development of departmental protocols.
- Perform routine and complex neurophysiological investigations in keeping with experience and qualifications, including out-patients and in-patients at the bedside as required.
- Consideration given to newly qualified staff and those with demonstrable experience.
- Monitor clinical change and provide accurate clinical information to support interpretation by referring consultants and senior colleagues.
- Use initiative to adapt, prolong or change an investigation to meet clinical needs, optimizing diagnostic information.
- Undertake and interpret diagnostic tests, including equipment testing and highly specialist tests.
- Analyze prolonged periods of complex data and produce accurate factual reports; document clinical changes/events or interventions.
- Conduct routine preventative and corrective maintenance on equipment, calibrate regularly and recognise faults; clean equipment and dispose of clinical waste per guidelines.
- Ensure safe archiving/ indexing of pertinent data to storage media or databases and liaise with wards and staff to coordinate investigations according to clinical urgency and resource availability.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
- Substantial and relevant post-qualification experience within clinical neurophysiology.
- Proven knowledge of a range of neurophysiological procedures with practical experience.
- Technical expertise in advanced procedures (e.g., ambulatory EEG/telemetry/evoked potentials).
- Clinical physiology degree or equivalent with relevant post-qualification experience.
- Professional registration (AHCS/RCCP/HCPC) or willingness to work towards within a stated timeframe.
- Good communication skills, written and verbal; ability to communicate clearly at all levels.
- Effective influencing skills with staff and senior health care professionals.
Desirable
- Neurophysiology specialist courses.
- Membership of an appropriate professional organization.
- Teaching/training qualification (e.g., STP trainer status).
- ECNE/ANS/NSHCS practical examinations.
- Demonstrable supervisory and management experience.
