Job description

To support the practice in the delivery of clinical and administrative services, working as part of the practice multi‑disciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to registered patients of the practice.

The Healthcare Assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education while also supporting the administrative team on an as‑required basis.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a Healthcare Assistant to join our friendly team.

You will support the practice in the delivery of nursing services, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to the entitled patient population. The healthcare assistant will deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion and patient education.

About us

Riverside Medical Practice is based at Pontllanfraith Health Centre and is a busy single site practice with a stable list size of approximately 8,900 patients.

You will work alongside an excellent clinical team comprising of 4 GPs, 1 Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 2 Practice Nurses, 1 Health Care Assistant, 1 phlebotomist, and an excellent receptionist and administrative team. We also have a team of NCN/HB Allied Health Professionals working from the practice site to include a Physiotherapist, a Psychological Health Practitioner and a Pharmacist. The District Nursing Team are also based within the building along with other Health Board Allied Health Professionals and an Independent Dispensing Pharmacy also provides a service from within the building.

We provide an exceptional service and are proud to have been awarded Best GP practice in South Wales 2024 and runners up in 2023.

Job responsibilities
  1. Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.
  2. Assist in the assessment and surveillance of patients' health & wellbeing.
  3. Undertake new patient health checks.
  4. Support health promotion programmes.
  5. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate, recording findings accurately.
  6. Facilitate routine and 24‑hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly.
  7. Undertake wound care, dressings and suture removal.
  8. Support the practice with the management of chronic disease clinics (to include diabetic reviews and foot check).
  9. Carry out BMI checks as directed.
  10. Act as a chaperone as required.
  11. Undertake venepuncture.
  12. Carry out ear irrigation.
  13. Carry out ECGs.
  14. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.
  15. Provide support during minor operations as required.
  16. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.
  17. Ensure vaccine/cold‑chain storage monitoring and recording of fridges and are cleaned routinely in accordance with guidance.
  18. Maintain and reorder stock and vaccines.
  19. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with practice policy.
  20. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.
  21. Ensure a timely recall of patients for ongoing care including disease management reviews.
  22. Support monitoring and actioning of test results.
  23. Action read coding and summarise medical records.
  24. Other clinical tasks as required (within your scope).
  25. Other admin tasks as required (within your scope).
  26. Participate in practice audit as directed.
  27. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
  28. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice.
  29. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.
Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level.
  • Ear Syringing Certification.
  • Spirometry Certification.
Experience
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience recording basic clinical observations.
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment.
