Job summary
The Senior HCA / Senior Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) works as part of a multidisciplinary team in an acute hospital setting. The role is supported by a Registered Professional and involves delivering comprehensive patient care and supporting the clinical team.
Key responsibilities
- Perform patient care tasks – personal hygiene, feeding, mobilising, wound care, dressing changes, catheter and cannula removal.
- Assist with clinical assessments, e.g. vital sign monitoring, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, and record results in the patient record system.
- Support safe patient transfer and mobilisation, using moving & handling equipment.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient documentation – fluid intake charts, observation records, and other health record entries.
- Communicate observations and any changes in a patient’s physical or psychological needs to the Registered Professional.
- Promote a safe, person‑centred environment, following Trust policies, information governance and health and safety procedures.
- Use and maintain clinical equipment – patient trolleys, beds, pressure relieving aids, glucometers, and other relevant devices.
- Co‑operate with and develop relationships with the multidisciplinary team, colleagues in other disciplines and patients’ families and carers.
Qualifications and training
- Vocational qualification level III in Health Care or equivalent experience.
- Care Certificate attainment (or equivalent).
- Basic IT skills – use of patient record systems such as iCare, Rio, Safeguard.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills; literacy, numeracy to Level 1 Maths and English.
Experience
- Experience working in a health or social care environment.
- Experience of dealing with the general public.
Essential knowledge, skills and personal qualities
- Strong communication skills – clear oral and written communication, ability to follow instructions and report observations.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment, prioritise, meet deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of equipment used in healthcare and ability to keep equipment in good working order.
- Willingness to work flexible shift patterns, internal rotation, night duty and unsocial hours according to service needs.
- Demonstrable caring, compassionate and empathetic disposition.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and adherence to Trust values.

Salary: £24,937 to £26,598 per annum plus HCA
