Healthcare assistant or trainee / trained nursing associate

We are looking for a healthcare assistant or a trainee/trained nursing associate to join our friendly and supportive team of GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Healthcare Assistants and non-clinical team members at Wragby Surgery. The surgery is purpose-built with large consulting rooms that serve the town of Wragby and the surrounding villages. The practice has a number of patients who are housebound or live in care homes and the post holder may be required to visit these patients in the community.

The successful candidate will support us in maintaining a high professional standard of care to our patients as well as to provide assistance to the GPs and other members of the primary healthcare team. We recognise that Healthcare Assistants have varying levels of experience and we will provide the necessary training and support to further develop your skills. It is essential that this role holder works within their own level of competency and to expand their role in accordance with practice requirements and their own scope of practice.

Main duties of the job

Duties and Responsibilities will depend on the experience/qualification of the candidate but the purpose of the role is to work as a member of the general practice team to facilitate clinical care in a holistic and proactive manner to patients including health promotion (BP checks, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis and smoking status), routine nursing tasks (venepuncture, recording ECG, chaperoning and assisting patients and dressings and wound care) and monitor/ manage stock and equipment.

Job responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities will depend on the experience/qualification of the candidate but could cover:

Offer health promotion programmes by providing a holistic assessment, which may include:

  • BP checks, height, weight, BMI, urinalysis and smoking status
  • Breast health awareness
  • Cervical screening
  • New patient checks
  • Well man/woman checks
  • Advice for healthy eating, exercise, alcohol consumption and smoking

Perform routine nursing tasks such as:

  • Venepuncture
  • Recording ECG
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients
  • Dressings and wound care

Offer advice about childhood and adult vaccinations and administer vaccines according to current guidelines and legislation.

Administer and monitor medication consistent with protocols, standards, and legislation.

Monitor and manage maintenance of stock and equipment, reporting to nurses / Practice Manager as required.

Perform other clinical tasks as trained and agreed to meet the needs of the Practice. This may include:

  • Chronic disease management reviews including asthma, diabetic, non-diabetic hyperglycaemia cardiovascular disease, high risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension
  • Consultations for diabetics including lifestyle advice, BP, weight, height, foot assessments and referring to suitable registered practitioners
  • Administer IM vaccinations including NHS selective programme, NHS additional vaccinations and NHS supported travel vaccinations which may include: Covid, Shingles, Pneumococcal, Influenza, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Boostrix, Meningitis ACWY, HiB, Revaxis under a Patient Specific Directive
  • Administer injectable contraception including under a Patient Specific Directive following the latest injection guidelines if appropriate, and refer to GP or suitable qualified practitioner if required
  • Perform wound care following an documented plan of care completed by a suitable qualified practitioner
  • Prepare specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
  • Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions according to Infection Control guidelines

Undertake infection control monitoring.

Work with the practice population and wider community to promote healthy living and encourage uptake of services.
