Job summary

A major healthcare provider in Liverpool is seeking a part-time Healthcare Assistant for the Ophthalmology unit. The successful candidate will support the Macular service team, providing high standards of patient care. A willingness to undertake NVQ level 3 and previous hospital experience at NVQ level 2 are essential for this role. The salary ranges from £24,937 to £26,598 pro rata.

Healthcare Assistant - Ophthalmology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our Macular service within St Paul's at the Royal Liverpool Hospital on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will have experience within a hospital Ophthalmology unit and experience with Macular patients undergoing intravitreal injections.

Main duties of the job

The role will include general health care as well as assisting the specialist nurse practitioners and medical staff within the macular service. The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills, attention to detail and be able to work on a variety of IT systems.

Working under the supervision of a registered nurse, the post holder will assist the Macular Service Department team in providing the highest possible standard of care for patients and their families/carers. The post holder will undertake a range of tasks and duties as delegated by a registered nurse.

Job responsibilities
  • Participate in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Provide toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  • Carry out movement and handling within safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and patient manual handling plan.
  • Obtain specimens from patients for testing.
  • Remove cannulae, catheters and nasogastric tubes.
  • Undertake dressing of non-complex wounds in accordance with identified competencies and plan of care.
  • Prepare and maintain environments for clinical treatments and investigations.
  • Prepare patients for treatments, investigations or procedures, offering support and answering questions appropriate to own knowledge/experience.
  • Collect blood products from laboratory as requested.
  • Chaperone and escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital and to other hospitals for investigations.
  • Assist registered nurse in performing last offices.
  • Observe general and clinical observations of patients, reporting any untoward events to registered nursing staff.
  • Record blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration rate, oxygen saturation; undertake blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and/or cannulation upon the direction of the registered nurse.
