Job summary

Description

We are looking for Healthcare Assistant to join our Healthcare team at Queen Alexandra College.

Under the direction of the nursing team, you will be responsible for overseeing the general health needs of students on a daily basis, including the administration of medication and providing care in line with student’s health related care plans.

You will be based in our Healthcare Centre within the college campus but will be expected to work across all areas of the campus to manage student need.

32.5 Hours, 08 : 30 to 15 : 30, Monday to Friday

43 weeks - Term Time with 4 weeks worked over the Summer Break

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote the values, aims and ethos of the College both within their role and within the corporate life of the College.
  • Have an awareness / experience of working with individuals with learning disabilities / difficulties, autism, physical disabilities, mental health needs and visual impairment.
  • Assess the primary health needs of students who attend the Healthcare Centre on an ‘as required’ basis and provide appropriate treatment under the supervision of the qualified nurses.
  • Support students with a range of health needs and interventions including epilepsy, NEAD, diabetes, asthma, anaphylaxis, PEG feeding and intermittent catheterisation.
  • Maintain accurate and professional written and electronic records in line with GDPR and the NMC Nursing Code of Conduct.
  • Provide first aid to students, staff and visitors who are involved in accidents or incidents resulting in injury.
  • Manage the first aid box provision within the college and maintain adequate stock levels.
  • Administer, store and manage medication in line with current legislation and standards.
  • Be involved in the auditing of all aspects of medication management and the monitoring and ordering of stock within the Healthcare Centre.
  • Work with healthcare staff and staff across the college to maintain high standards of infection control.
  • To attend relevant meetings and training, as required.
  • Be able to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively in a busy and sometimes unpredictable environment.
  • Be able to communicate effectively at all levels with students, their families / carers, staff and external agencies.
  • Where appropriate, participate in basic student assessments and care plan reviews.
  • Demonstrate a good understanding of equality and diversity and encourage students to be involved in their care, respecting their physical, emotional and social needs.
  • Have an awareness of Ofsted and CQC regulations with regards to Specialist Colleges.
  • Become familiar with all emergency procedures and with policies and procedures pertaining to healthcare, academic and residential activities, including health and safety, safeguarding, complaints etc.
  • Perform such other duties commensurate with the status of the post as the Principal shall from time to time decide.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

A Level 2 or 3 diploma in adult social care, or equivalent.

To hold GCSE qualifications in Mathematics and English, or equivalent.

To have experience of working within a care setting, including administering medication and providing basic first aid.

To have practical experience of working with people who have a range of healthcare needs and adhering to health protocols.

To have excellent communication skills both written and oral

To have excellent IT skills.

To be self-motivated and used to working under limited supervision.

To respect each service users wish for choice, dignity and independence

Education is provided through a national residential College that supports a diverse range of student / client abilities and needs. Our Community Services based at our Umberslade Campus in Stirchley include a supporter worker service, women's group, men's group, LGBTQ plus group, Saturday Socials, The Night Owl Experience (disability friendly night club visit in Birmingham City Centre).
