A Band 3 Orthopaedics Healthcare Assistant works as part of a multidisciplinary team to support the care, treatment, and recovery of patients with musculoskeletal conditions, fractures, or post-surgical needs. The role involves both direct patient care and clinical support duties, under the supervision of registered nurses and other healthcare professionals.
- Patient Care & Support
- Assist patients with personal care (washing, dressing, toileting, mobility).
- Support patients before and after orthopaedic procedures.
- Encourage independence and promote rehabilitation.
- Clinical Duties
- Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation).
- Carry out routine observations and report changes in patients' conditions.
- Support in applying and monitoring mobility aids, splints, or casts (under supervision).
- Assist with wound care, dressings, and monitoring post-operative sites.
- Chaperone patients during medical examinations.
- Ward & Team Support
- Prepare beds, equipment, and materials for admissions and procedures.
- Assist registered staff with plaster room or theatre support (if trained).
- Maintain accurate documentation of care given.
- Work closely with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nurses to aid patient recovery.
- Patient Wellbeing
- Provide reassurance and emotional support to patients and families.
- Promote infection control, dignity, and safeguarding principles.
- Encourage mobility and rehabilitation exercises as instructed by physiotherapy staff.
- The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
