Job summary

As a Health Care Assistant working across both our GP practice and the Guildford and Waverley Community Gynae Service, you play a vital role in delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care. In the GP practice you support everyday clinical activity such as observations, phlebotomy, ECGs, vaccinations (if trained), health checks, and assisting with long‑term condition management. Within the community gynaecology service you provide sensitive support to women attending clinics, assist with examinations and minor procedures, prepare clinical areas, and help ensure smooth, efficient clinic flow. Across both settings you maintain excellent standards of communication, dignity, and infection control while being a reassuring presence for patients.

Main duties of the job
  • Undertake routine clinical procedures including blood pressure measurement, height, weight, BMI, and urinalysis
  • Carry out venepuncture, ECGs, wound care, and removal of sutures/clips (where trained and competent)
  • Assist with NHS Health Checks and chronic disease monitoring clinics
  • Prepare patients and clinical rooms for consultations and procedures
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of patient information on clinical systems
  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards at all times
  • Stock clinical rooms and ensure equipment is cleaned and maintained
  • Work within agreed protocols, policies, and scope of practice

Job description

To provide high‑quality clinical and administrative support within the GP practice, working under the supervision of registered nurses and GPs. The Healthcare Assistant will deliver a range of patient care activities, promote health and wellbeing, and contribute to efficient practice operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake clinical observations: blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, height, weight, BMI.
  • Perform phlebotomy (if trained and competent)
  • Carry out ECGs
  • Perform urinalysis and prepare specimens for laboratory testing
  • Conduct NHS Health Checks and routine health screening
  • Support chronic disease monitoring (e.g., diabetes, hypertension reviews) within scope
  • Assist with wound care, dressings, and suture removal (if trained)
  • Administer vaccines (e.g., flu) if appropriately trained under PSD/PGD
  • Support smoking cessation, diet, and lifestyle interventions
  • Provide chaperoning for patient examinations
  • Assist with minor surgery clinics and other procedures
  • Ensure proper infection prevention and control practices
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records
Administrative Duties
  • Prepare clinical rooms and ensure equipment is stocked and maintained
  • Clean and sterilise instruments in line with practice policy
  • Book appointments, manage patient flow, and support clinics
  • Handle specimen transport processes
  • Assist with patient recall systems (e.g., screening, chronic disease reviews)
  • Support data entry into patient records and other systems
Professional Responsibilities
  • Work in line with practice policies, clinical protocols, and CQC standards
  • Participate in audits, quality improvement activities, and team meetings
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR requirements
  • Undertake mandatory and role‑specific training (e.g., safeguarding, BLS, infection control)
  • Work within defined scope of practice and seek support when needed
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and compassionate patient care
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative practice culture
Qualifications
Essential
  • GCSE grade A‑C in English and Maths
  • Experience working in healthcare, ideally in primary care
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow instructions and clinical protocols
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Commitment to confidentiality and safeguarding
  • Willingness to undertake training and development
Desirable
  • Previous experience as an HCA in a GP practice
  • Phlebotomy training and competency
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent
  • Experience using GP clinical systems (e.g., EMIS, SystmOne, Vision)
  • Competency in administering vaccines
  • Training in wound care or chronic disease support
