Military Medical Personnel is seeking a locum Healthcare Assistant for a two-week assignment at Innsworth Medical Centre, Defence Primary Healthcare. You will provide ward-based care under a Lead Practice Nurse, perform ECGs, venepuncture, and observations, and support primary care and occupational health services.

Qualifications

• NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent healthcare NVQ.
• NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or Care Certificate with primary healthcare experience.
• In-date Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
• In-date Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training.
• In-date Infection Prevention and Control training.
• In-date safeguarding children and adults training up to Level 2.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic ward-based nursing care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Record clinical observations, ECGs, venepuncture and urine tests.
• Assist in primary care, occupational health and chronic disease clinics.
• Support Medical Officers and practice nurse teams.
• Communicate with patients and coordinate with staff to meet needs.

Job description

Military Medical Personnel is placing a locum healthcare assistant on a two-week assignment with the Ministry of Defence at Innsworth Medical Centre. The core of the work is general nursing care in a bedded Defence Primary Healthcare facility, under the lead practice nurse, plus recording observations, ECGs and venepuncture. The post covers primary care, occupational health and chronic disease clinics for serving personnel, on 37.5 hours a week. Candidates need a PVG membership or Access Northern Ireland certificate, and visa sponsorship is not available.

What the job involves

• Provide basic ward-based nursing care in a Defence Primary Healthcare bedded facility, as part of a multi-disciplinary team, for the Defence Medical Services population at risk
• Give general basic nursing care under the supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse, carrying out tasks delegated by a registered healthcare professional
• Record clinical observations, tests and measurements, such as visual acuity, ECGs, venepuncture, peak flow, spirometry, urinalysis and specimen preparation, within individual competence
• Assist Medical Officers and practice nurse teams in primary care, occupational health assessment and chronic disease clinics, and with health promotion
• Communicate with patients in specific clinical situations and work with nursing and administrative staff to meet patient needs
• Provide medical administrative support as required
• Comply with infection prevention and control requirements
• Use equipment in line with local care directives and follow health and safety policy and regulations
• Undertake and keep in date all mandatory training set out in the DPHC guidance for locums

What’s required

Qualifications

• NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, or an equivalent healthcare NVQ
• NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, an equivalent healthcare NVQ or the Care Certificate, with demonstrable primary healthcare experience
• In-date Basic Life Support certificate
• In-date Automated External Defibrillator training
• In-date Infection Prevention and Control training
• In-date safeguarding children and young people and safeguarding adults training, up to and including Level 2

Experience

• At least 2 years' recent experience as a healthcare assistant within the last 3 years, in general practice or another healthcare setting

Skills & knowledge

• Training certificates or line manager evidence of competence in recording ECGs, venepuncture and urinalysis, within the last 3 years
• Training certificates or line manager evidence of competence in specimen preparation, simple dressing procedures and aseptic technique, within the last 3 years

Checks & eligibility

• PVG membership or Access Northern Ireland certificate
• Existing right to work in the UK, such as a valid visa with no restrictions on hours
• Satisfactory compliance requirements before placement
