A reputable civil engineering contractor is seeking a Freelance Health & Safety Officer to oversee health and safety compliance on a HVDC Converter Station project in Murton. This site-based role requires strong experience in civil engineering health and safety protocols, risk assessments, and direct client communication. Ideal candidates will have NEBOSH certification, a CSCS card, and proven experience in managing site safety standards. Freelance Health & Safety Officer - Civil Engineering

Location: Murton

Project: HVDC Converter Station (Civils)

Duration: Approx. 3 months

Start Date: January

Contract Type: Freelance / Contract CIS

The Role

We are working with a reputable civil engineering contractor who requires an experienced Freelance Health & Safety Officer to support civils works on a HVDC Converter Station project in Murton.

This is a site-based role, suited to someone who is confident operating independently on a live civils project, ensuring high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance while maintaining clear communication with both site teams and the end client.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparation, review and ongoing management of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
  • Site supervision to ensure works are carried out in line with approved RAMS and statutory requirements
  • Regular site inspections, audits and toolbox talks
  • Proactive identification of hazards and implementation of corrective actions
  • Acting as the main Health & Safety point of contact on site
  • Liaising with the client to ensure they are fully informed and confident in the safety of the works
  • Supporting site management with incident prevention and, if required, investigation and reporting
  • Ensuring compliance with company, client and legislative H&S standards at all times
About You
  • Proven experience as a Health & Safety Officer on civil engineering projects
  • Strong working knowledge of RAMS and safe systems of work
  • Confident supervising site activities and challenging unsafe behaviours
  • Comfortable dealing directly with clients and maintaining professional, transparent communication
  • Practical, site-focused approach — not purely desk-based
  • Able to work autonomously and integrate quickly into an existing site team
Qualifications (Essential / Preferred)
  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate (or equivalent)
  • CSCS card
  • Previous experience on major infrastructure or energy projects (advantageous)
  • Previous experience on civil engineering projects - earthworks, drainage, roads, remediation works.
