Job Title: Health & Safety Manager
Location: Altrincham
Salary: GBP50,000 – GBP60,000 + Package
The Client
Our client is a well–established civil engineering contractor with a strong reputation for delivering infrastructure, rail and civils projects. As the business grows, they are looking for a Health & Safety Manager to take ownership of their H&S function, building the systems and processes that support safe delivery on site and keeping the company's accreditations current.
This is a hands–on role with real influence. You will shape how health and safety is managed across the business and report directly to senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Systems and processes
- Design, implement and embed an effective H&S management system suited to a growing civil engineering business
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work
- Introduce clear reporting, audit and inspection processes, and track actions through to closure
- Put in place practical tools for incident and near–miss reporting, investigation and lessons learned
- Review and streamline existing documentation so it is usable on site, not just compliant on paper
Accreditations and compliance
- Own the company's accreditations and certifications (e.g. ISO 45001, CHAS, SafeContractor, Constructionline and other SSIP schemes), ensuring renewals and assessments are never missed
- Prepare for and lead external audits and assessments, and manage any corrective actions
- Keep up to date with legislation, HSE guidance and industry best practice, including CDM 2015, and ensure the business stays compliant
- Support the integration of H&S with quality and environmental management where relevant
Site and project support
- Carry out site inspections and audits, giving constructive feedback to site teams and subcontractors
- Support tender and pre–qualification submissions with H&S information
- Review subcontractor competence, documentation and RAMS
- Advise project managers and site leadership on risk, planning and CDM duties
Culture and training
- Promote a positive, proactive safety culture from directors to operatives
- Deliver or coordinate inductions, toolbox talks and training
- Monitor and report on H&S performance, including leading and lagging indicators
About you
Essential
- Proven experience in a health and safety role within civil engineering, construction or infrastructure
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate or General Certificate as a minimum (NEBOSH Diploma preferred)
- Demonstrable experience building or improving H&S systems and processes, not just maintaining them
- Hands–on experience managing accreditations and external audits
- Strong working knowledge of CDM 2015 and current UK H&S legislation
- Confident communicator who can earn credibility with directors, site teams and subcontractors alike
Desirable
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation or lead auditor training
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001
- Experience supporting prequalification and tender submissions
- Full UK driving licence (site travel required)
What's on offer
- Salary of GBP50,000 – GBP60,000 depending on experience
- The chance to build the H&S function and make a visible impact
- Genuine support and buy–in from senior management
