Job description
Overview

We're seeking an experienced Health and Safety Manager to join BW and play a key role in ensuring safe, compliant, and responsible project delivery across our sites. This is a hands‑on role involving regular site visits, audits, inspections, and close collaboration with our project teams and subcontractors.

Responsibilities
  • Liaise with Project Managers and Site Managers regarding the continued development of the Construction Phase Safety Plan as the specific project progresses.
  • Advise on‑site fire plans with Project Managers and ensure that all emergency and evacuation procedures are continually deployed.
  • Liaise with Project Managers regarding any specific risks on site, including those relating to electrical and mechanical installations.
  • Ensure that each project is undertaking inductions and "toolbox talks" to all levels of site personnel, making sure all are aware of their responsibilities and safe working practices.
  • Assist the site management team in problem‑solving potential high‑risk safety issues pre‑start or during projects.
  • Ensure health and safety statutory compliance is being met and maintained across all sites.
  • Carry out accident or incident investigations.
  • Liaise with the relevant authorities (e.g. HSE, local authority inspectors) as the need arises.
  • Carry out pre‑start H&S meetings for all projects.
  • Review risk assessments and consider how risks could be reduced.
  • Outline safe operational procedures that identify and take into account all relevant hazards, including electrical and mechanical risks.
  • Carry out regular site inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented.
  • Ensure working practices are safe and comply with legislation and Considerate Constructors principles.
  • Carry out in‑house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks.
  • Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements.
  • Keep up to date with new legislation and maintain a working knowledge of all Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation and any developments that affect the construction industry.
  • Attend seminars and read professional journals.
  • Produce management reports, newsletters and bulletins.
  • Advise on a range of specialist areas, e.g. fire regulations, hazardous substances, noise, safeguarding machinery, occupational diseases, and M&E safety.
  • Champion innovation across H&S and promote best practice in line with the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

The ideal candidate will bring proven experience within the construction or fit‑out industry, strong health and safety expertise, and sound knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, and knowledge of the Considerate Constructors Scheme.

Qualifications
  • NEBOSH in Construction, NCRQ or similar qualification (required).
  • Ideally have or be working towards CMIOSH or equivalent.
  • Proven experience working as an H&S Manager within the construction or fit‑out environment.
  • Strong electrical and mechanical safety awareness.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft products (training in bespoke IT systems will be provided).
  • Preferred membership of IOSH or IIRSM with a current, up-to-date CPD.
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001.
  • Familiarity with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and commitment to its principles.
